Technostress: How does it affect you?


How does technostress affect you? “Advances in technology have changed, and continue to
change, the way we live” (Jones, 2017). Technostress is a type of stress that is caused by the
rapid changes in technology and occurs as a result of the inability to meet the changing
competencies. Jones (2017) found that “... any negative impact on attitudes, thoughts,
behaviours, or body physiology that is caused either directly or indirectly by technology”. (as
cited in Brod, Rosel, & Weil, 1984). Nowadays technostress problems are rampant so that
has the effects of and the strategies to overcome it. There are many effects of technostress,
one of them is it can make us over-stimulated, anxious, or stressed out. Technostress also can
accumulate in people that cause us to end up feeling overwhelmed and never finished.
Besides that, technology can be time-saving so make us work better and more efficiently.
Next, there are can cause various symptoms like anxiety. The greater use of the internet was
associated with small, but significant declines in social involvement. It is also associated with
an increase in depression. Other than that, technostress among students may lead to a higher
burden on higher education institutions. There are strategies to overcome it, one is stopping
or limiting multitasking. Next, people should live on human-time. They also need to slow
down while working on the computer. Voice mail messages and email messages can be
strategic to overcome technostress. People also should not always be ‘on-call’. Lastly, the
email ‘alarm’ should be turned off. In conclusion, we should overcome this technostress
before it becomes more worst.
