Looking Back at

Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights 2019

A long running yearly tradition at Universal Studios in Orlando is Halloween Horror

Nights. For 29 years the creative team at Universal has made amazing haunted houses that are

world-renowned for their movie-like quality and extreme scariness. Sadly, we will not get to

attend the 30th year of the event. It was cancelled in July because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

After an amazing 2019 event that featured 10 amazing Haunted Houses, including one based

on the hit Netflix show Stranger Things, the event's cancellation left me and many fans

disappointed.

Right now Halloween Horror Nights 30 would be going on, but we sadly aren’t able to

have it this year, so I decided to take a look back at last year’s haunted houses to reminisce

about how amazing this event is for Universal Studios fans. There were 10 houses last year that
were all highly regarded. There was a mixture of original houses and houses based off of

existing properties like Stranger Things and the movie Us.

Original Houses Were Scarier Than Ever!

Last year's original houses were “House of 1000 Corpses” created by horror movie

filmmaker Rob Zombie, which not only got a house, but also had a scare zone with undead

hillbillies running around and scaring people on the streets. “Depths of Fear”, a house based on

deepwater voyages and the unknown creatures that live under the sea. “Yeti, Terror of the

Yukon” which takes place in a cold cabin in the woods with the temperature low and fake snow

falling to make it feel as if you are out in a snowstorm with a dangerous Yeti looking to kill you.

“Graveyard Games’ taking place in a classic scary haunted cemetary with a backstory including

kids playing there at night and being killed by the ghosts haunting it. The final original house

was “Nightingales: Blood Pit.” This house was filled with blood and dead bodies in an ancient

rome setting that had gladiators killing everyone and drinking their blood during a drought.

Not only were these houses extremely scary to be in, but the detail put into each house

was amazing. The best way to experience any of the houses is to completely drop your guard

and just look around at all the little things and great details that are put into each house. You are

going to get scared there is no hiding from that, but if you are going into any haunted house and

don’t want to be scared then you have made a bad choice.

Houses Based on Existing Properties Put You Right Into the Movie!

While the original houses are amazing to go inside and are the scariest part of the event,

the most popular attractions were the houses based off movies and TV shows. The most

popular one by far was the “Stranger Things” house. The house took you through season two

and three of the show and had insane accuracy of set pieces and monsters from the show.

“Killer Klowns from Outer Space” was a house based on an 80s cult classic movie. Not many

people have seen this movie, but everyone's a little creeped out by clowns, and clowns that look

like these ones are very scary to be near.

Klowns” are something that everyone is creeped out by

“Universal Monsters” includes all of the classic monsters that everyone knows including

Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman. Not the scariest, but a lot of love was put into this

house. Universal treated their own properties with great respect. “Us”, based on the Jordan

Peele horror movie of the same name, is very scary, but I never saw the movie so I wasn’t able

to fully understand what was going on. People I know that saw the movie said the house was

very accurate to the film. The final house based on an existing property was “Ghostbusters.” A

classic movie with a house that has so many scenes from the film recreated. It is not a scary

house, but it isn’t a scary movie.

Even though we are not going to get Halloween Horror Nights in 2020, reminiscing

through the houses from last year makes me extremely excited for next years event!

It was so disappointing to hear the news that Halloween Horror Nights was going to be
cancelled for 2020. The 30th year of the event was going to be the best one yet. I know fans
wanted it even more than we did. Even though we aren’t going to be able to scare you all this
year, we still have the memories of years prior.
Last year's event was our biggest ever with 10 total houses based off of existing
properties and original houses made by the creative team at Universal Studios Orlando.
Remember being transported into Hawkins when you went through the Stranger Things house
or going through cold snowy mountains in Yeti, Terror of the Yukon? Or how about being
surrounded by classic horror monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein in Universal Monsters?
Some scary times we’ve had in the past.
Halloween Horror Nights will return someday, but we don’t know when. We still have
some great spooktacular memories. Read through this blog post that talks about the houses
