Model Examination March 2019 Reg. No.

Programme : B.E. Date : 22/03/2019

Branch : Civil Engineering Time : 09.30am to 12.30pm
Semester : 06 Duration : 3Hrs
Subject code : CE 6603 Maximum : 100 Marks
Subject Name : Design of Steel Structures

PART A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1 Draw the stress strain curve for mild steel bar showing the salient points.
2 List out the failure of bolted joints.
3 Classify the modes of failure in Tension member.
4 What is a lug angle?
5 What is the difference in behaviour between tension and compression member in the
design aspect?
6 What are the parameters that have an effect on the column strength?
7 What do you mean by shape factor?
8 What is local buckling of a beam member?
9 What is the economic range of spacing of truss?
10 What are the factors to be considered while choosing the cladding material?

PART B (5 x 13 = 65 Marks)
11 a) Find the safe load and efficiency of a double cover butt joint. The main plates (13)
are 12mm thick connected by 18mm diameter bolts at a pitch of 100mm.
Design the cover plate also. What is the percentage reduction in the efficiency
of the joint if the plates are jointed?
(or)
b) A tie member 75mm x 8mm connected to a 10mm thick gusset plate is to (13)
transmit a load of 90KN. Design the fillet weld and calculate the necessary
over lap. Assume site welding.
12 a) Design a splice to connect a 300 X 20mm plate with a 300 x 10mm plate. The (13)
design load is 500kN. Use 20mm bolts fabricated in shop.
(or)
b) Design a single angle section for a tension member of a roof truss to carry a (13)
pull of 100kN. The member is subjected to possible reversal of stress due to
action of wind. The length of the member from c/c of intersection is 3.5m.

13 a) Design a single angle strut connected to the gusset plate to carry 180kN (13)
factored load. The length of the strut between centre to centre intersections is
3m
(or)
b) A steel column ISHB 400 @ 759.3 N/m is subjected to a factored axial load (13)
of 2000 kN. Design the slab base plate for the column and base plate are
machined and the concrete footing is M 20 grade..
14 a) Design a simply supported beam of span 5m to carry a factored uniformly (13)
1
distributed load of 47kN/m
(or)
b) A welded plate girder of span 25 m is laterally restrained throughout its (13)
length. It has to carry a load of 80 kN/m over the whole span besides its
weight. Design the girder without intermediate transverse stiffness.
15 a) List out the various elements of the roof truss and mark all its significance. (13)
(or)
b) Design the purlin for the following specifications. (13)
Span of truss = 12m,
Pitch = one fifth of span,
Spacing of truss = 5m,
Spacing of Purlins = 1.5m,
Load from roofing materials = 200N/m2,
Wind load = 1200N/m2. Use angle section

PART C (1 x 15 = 15 Marks)

16 a) A tie member consists of a two ISMC 250. The channels are connected on (15)
either side of a 12mm thick gusset plate. Design the welded joint to develop
the full strength of the tie. However the overlap is to be limited to 400mm.
(or)
b) Explain the step by step design procedure for design of battened column as (15)
per codel provision.
