Threats to mangroves
Overfishing is the removal of a species of
fish from a body of water at a rate that
the species cannot replenish in time,
resulting in those species either becoming
depleted or very underpopulated in that
given area.
Bycatch
Bycatch occurs because modern fishing gear is
very efficient, often covers an extensive area,
and can be highly unselective—it catches not
only the target species but many other marine
animals as well. Poor fisheries management in
certain countries further contributes to
the problem.
Mangroves act as nursery and breeding
grounds for baby fishes.
Mangroves forest in fishing
The roots of mangroves protect baby
fishes from large predators.
Eggs and baby fishes are protected
from being washed away by high tide.
