1. General
The LOFT (Line Oriented Flight Training) session is conducted to summarize all the exercises learned and provide crews with the
opportunity to enhance the knowledge learned throughout the course and to give the trainee experience in operating the aircraft in real
time scenarios (Simulated Avianca operation).
This session can only be carried out by Avianca instructors.
2. Session Objective
The LOFT session allows trainees to apply their knowledge, skills and crew resource management principles in a simulated regular
flight.
A normal flight is planned from gate to gate, during which selected abnormal situations are presented to the crew. Emphasis should be
such that trainees are given the opportunity to prepare the aircraft for flight, including complete briefings and load sheet confirmation
and use of the FlySmart®, all within the normal time constraints of a line flight. Emphasis is on the practicing of normal and abnormal
procedures and the management of workload.
This session is not a captaincy check, rather it is realistic training. However there is the expectation that the crew will have good
knowledge of the memory items and SOP / PFO. The instructor should take every opportunity to add value to the session through
trainee interaction.
NOTE
To make the LOFT as valuable as realistic as possible, flight documentation is provided during the briefing as part of the training so
trainees can review before the session.
The flight briefing will begin one and a half (1:30) hours before the scheduled session start time to allow the crew time to review the
documentation after the briefing.
3. Overview
The takeoff time for this flight is considered to be 00:40 minutes after
the session starts. Crews are expected to be airborne at this time.
The session begins in Boston for a return flight to New York, after being divert due to weather. Weather conditions in Boston are
deteriorating with increasing wind and CBs in the area. Weather in New York is normal. Flight documentation is provided by the
instructor at briefing. However, before the crew are given the documentation the instructor must brief the following:
• The objectives
• The way the session will be conducted
• The proficiency criteria. The instructor should insist that the LOFT is not a check, but the crew must demonstrate its capacity to:
- Operate the aircraft safely and efficiently in a high workload environment – safety should never be compromised.
- Deal with emergency / abnormal situations.
- Maintain efficient LTW in difficult situations.
• SOP / PFO
• Task sharing
• Callouts
• Aircraft systems and performance
• Rules of the air and ATC phraseology
The instructor must assess the ability of each trainee to operate in a real-life scenario, safe and efficient.
• How to deal with abnormal situations: Fly, Navigate, Communicate and Manage
• The possible ways to manage workload; use of automation, task sharing, buying time by reducing speed, holding, etc.
• How and when to communicate with ATC, cabin crew, passengers and company in that order.
After the first flight has been safely completed, allow a 10-minute break, before the return sector from Boston to New York. Transit
cockpit preparation and performance calculation is necessary. (PF for the return flight is the PM on the first part).
Debriefing is an essential part of the LOFT session but should not last more than 30 minutes.
4. Training topics
It is recommended that instructors cover the following topics in the classroom briefing:
5. Competencies criteria
Competencies to be graded:
6. Flight details
• Flight Data: As per OFP for the session and briefed by the instructor.
• Weather: As briefed by the instructor.
• Performance: As per OFP and load sheet.

Session guide
Instructors should create an environment that is realistic as possible. All event numbers
are included in the instructor's guide.
Avianca has authorization from UAEAC to carry out ZFT base training in
its training program, in simulators approved for ZFT.
1. General
The Zero Flight Time (ZFT) module is divided in two parts. The first part places a heavy emphasis on training; with a “back to basics”
approach to developing handling proficiency: Observe (Autoland or instructor) then practice under coaching. The second part, whilst
still being training, is a demonstration of competency.
The training departments philosophy is that trainees do not learn to land on the line. If the instructor has any doubts on the trainee's
ability to consistently perform safe, effective landings in a variety of conditions then they should remain in the simulator program until
proficiency is obtained.
NOTE
the trainee occupies his respective pilot seat while the instructor is in the other seat.
The second trainee observes the session from the jump seat.
2. Session Objectives
Establish the correct seat, armrest, rudder and hand position (side stick and thrust levers). Complete a 180° turn on the runway as per
FCOM.
One of the main objectives is to establish the “pitch picture” and correct flare rate from observation of Autoland's and instructor demos,
this will help to establish a safe, effective and repeatable landing technique in a variety o conditions.
During the session, other objectives are focused into complete takeoff and landings with:
• Wind variations including max cross wind and tailwind
• Day and night conditions
• Wet and dry runway conditions
• Varying takeoff and landing weights including MTOW, MLW and very light weight.
NOTE
A minimum of six (6) takeoff and six (6) full stop landings are required to certified the session.
3.1 Reference
• PFO (Avianca policy)
• FCOM / PRO-NOR-SOP / Visual approach
• FCOM / PRO-NOR-SOP / Takeoff and landing (Crosswind)
• FCTM / PR-AEP-MISC / Stall
• FCTM / PR-NP-SOP / Takeoff
4. Proficiency criteria
IMPORTANT
Trainees to be presented to the ZFT must have satisfactorily completed the skill test. This session cannot be used to prepare the skill
test nor can it be done before it.
The successful completion of ZFT qualifies a pilot to commence the IOE/LIFUS verification. All six (6) landings must be completed to at
least a satisfactory standard to exit the simulator program. Any landing(s) may be trained to competency and repeated. Repeats need
to be at least a satisfactory standard.
Demonstrate adequate manual handling skills in normal law in crosswind conditions, correct application of tailwind takeoff procedure
and adequate tailwind landing technique, knowledge of crosswind and tailwind limitations. Trainees must demonstrate the correct
landing technique within the TDZ, with accurate centerline tracking.
5. Instructor guidance
• Visual patterns shall be flow as per FCOM.
• Do not fuel freeze.
• Confirm cockpit setup prior to each departure.
• Prior to each circuit, conduct a mini brief to highlight the change of conditions and the associated learning points.
• Remaining time may be devoted to repeat patterns as required.
• Wind, runway and weight conditions vary for each scenario, circuit directions for CM1 and CM2 are different, ATHR use varies
throughout the ZFT exercises, configuration settings vary throughout the session.
6. Training data
The ZFT session will be run at the Kennedy international airport in New York city (KJFK), the runway selection and weather conditions
will be made according to the syllabus and the instructors discretion.
MCDU INIT: The instructor will help in the quick set up of the MCDU for the trainees, according to their instructor's guide and the
conditions of the session.
PERF INIT: During the last part of the briefing (before going to the sim) the instructor will use the runway 4L with the trainees and will
make the performance calculations with the FlySmart ® for that runway and the conditions defined.
NOTE
Performance calculations should not be done inside the simulator to save time.
SCENE: Winter
ATIS: The weather conditions will change according to any exercise, but always working for Runway 4L.
