MODULE 4

RIZAL’S TRAVEL IN EUROPE, U.S. AND THE PUBLICATION OF NOLI ME

TANGERE

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Admire Rizal’s love and concern for his country and fellow Filipinos
 It's innate and constant feeling among humans
2. Comprehensively discuss the life experiences of Rizal in Europe and United States
 Jose Rizal's travels in Europe are well-dcoumented. Our national hero left the
Philippines in 1882 to study medicine in Spain. He also visited France to learn
more about how medicine was practiced there. And of course, it was in Germany
where he published his seminal novel Noli Me Tangere
 I visited the largest cities of America with their big buildings, electric lights, and
magnificent conceptions. Undoubtedly America is a great country, but it still has
many defects. There is no real civil liberty. In some states a Negro cannot marry a
white woman, nor can a Negress marry a white man. Because of the hatred of the
Chinese, other Asiatics, like the Japanese, being confused with them, are likewise
disliked by the ignorant Americans. These customs are excessively strict."
3. Identify the happenings in the first homecoming of Rizal.
 Rizal’s First HomecomingHomecoming (1887-1888)(1887-1888
 Rizal’s plans of coming back home • As early as 1884, Rizal wanted to go back to
the Philippines for the following reasons: – Financial difficulties in Calamba –
Dissatisfaction with his studies in Madrid – Desire to prove that there is no reason
to fear going home. – His belief that the Spanish regime will not punish the
innocent.
• Rizal was determined to come back to the Philippines for the following reasons: – To
operate his mother’s eyes – To serve his people who had long been oppressed by
Spanish tyrants. – To find out for himself how the Noli Me Tangere and his other
writings were affecting Filipinos and Spaniards. – To inquire why Leonor Rivera
remained silent.
 Rizal arrives in ManilaRizal arrives in Manila Rizal left Rome by train to Marseilles,
a French port and boarded Djemnah, the same steamer that brought him to Europe
five years ago. • There were 50 passengers: 4 Englishmen, 2 Germans, 3 Chinese,
2 Japanese, 40 Frenchmen, and 1 Filipino (Rizal) • When the ship reached Aden,
the weather became rough and some of Rizal’s book got wet. • In Saigon (Ho Chi
Minh), Vietnam – he transferred to another steamer, Haiphong, that brought him
to Manila.
 Happy Homecoming • When Rizal arrived in Calamba, rumors spread that he was
a: – German spy – An agent of Otto Von Bismarck – the liberator of Germany. – A
Protestant – A Mason – A soul halfway to damnation • Paciano – did not leave him
during the first days after arrival to protect him from any enemy assault. • Don
Francisco – did not permit him to go out alone

publication. The book was historically significant and was instrumental in the
establishing of the Filipino‘s sense of national identity. It talked about the
Spaniard’s arrogance and despicable used of religion to achieved their own
desires and rise to power. Rizal reflected his life through this novel and also to the
life of the Filipinos during Spanish colonization. The novel mostly talked about the
life of Crisostomo Ibarra, a member of the Insulares (Creoles) social class, and a
series of unfortunate events that he encountered through the works of a
Franciscan friar, namely Padre Damaso Verdolagas, and by the
Spanish conquistadors. The book indirectly influenced a revolution although the
author, Jose Rizal, advocated non-violent means and only direct representation to
the Spanish government using his intelligence and pen. It called on the Filipino to
recover our self-confidence, to appreciate our own worth, to return to the heritage
of our ancestors, and to assert ourselves as the equal of the Spaniard. It insisted
on the need of education, of dedication to the country, and of absorbing aspects
of foreign cultures that would enhance the native traditions.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 6.1 Present Realities:

Directions: Follow the instruction and answer the following.

1. What is the difference between honesty/integrity and dishonety exhibited by
individuals in our present Philippine society?
 Integrity implies a consistent behavior, whether honest or not. Honesty implies
being truthful (even if it is incorrect) about a subject at hand. Honesty, by definition,
is to tell the truth and being true. Integrity is having strong moral principles based
on honesty and to follow those principles religiously.
2. Explain how one’s honesty/integrity or dishonesty develops.

 Honesty is a facet of moral character that connotes positive and virtuous attributes
such as integrity, truthfulness, straightforwardness, including straightforwardness
of conduct, along with the absence of lying, cheating, theft, etc. Honesty also
involves being trustworthy, loyal, fair, and sincere.
3. From your personal experiences, cite some possible outcomes of honesty.
Integrity and dishonesty.

 Honesty has been linked to less colds, less fatigue, less depression, and
less anxiety. Less stress.Being honest always I won’t hurt anybody
 Having a integrity in life , people will trust me, and word will spread faster than any
advertising campaign I could ever come up with. Similarly, a lack of integrity will
scupper my reputation. So acting with integrity will allow me to reap
the benefits from better relationships with the people you deal with.
 Saying dishonesty is making myself out to be someone or something I am not the
main idea of workplace dishonesty. It could be difficult to live out informed non-
existent persona, in fact, this could only create psychological problems,
severe anxiety, depression, and overall sense of mistrust
4. Are you convinced that there is a link between dishonesty and common societal
problems? Explain your answer.

 Yes,One of the common problem in our society is poverty. There's a lot of people
who suffer from it because of the corrupt and dishonest officials who keep the
funds for the people in their own pockets.
5. Do you consider Rizal as an ideal role model for honesty/integrity? Support your
answer with historical facts

 yes because Jose Rizal became the Philippine national hero because
he fought for freedom in a silent but powerful way. He expressed his
love for the Philippines through his novels, essays and articles rather
than through the use of force or aggression. ... Instead he used his
writings to open the eyes of the Filipinos.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 6.2 Present Realities:

Directions: Follow the instruction and answer the following.

1. From your own personal experiences at home or in school, give at least two
examples when you were rewarded for your industriousness or punished for your
laziness.
 Last year my papa bought me a new cell phone as a reward for being a hard
working student
 My mom scolded me for not cleaning the house and she punished me she didn't
give me money

2. Did Dr. Jose Rizal believe that Filipinos were born lazy or indolent? Explain your
aswer.
 No, Rizal acknowledges the prior work of Gregorio Sancianco and admits that
indolence does exist among the Filipinos, but it cannot be attributed to the troubles
and backwardness of the country; rather it is the effect of the backwardness and
troubles experienced by the country. Past writings on indolence revolve only on
either denying or affirming, and never studying its causes in depth. One must study
the causes of indolence, Rizal says, before curing it. He therefore enumerates the
causes of indolence and elaborates on the circumstances that have led to it. The
hot climate, he points out, is a reasonable predisposition for indolence. Filipinos
cannot be compared to Europeans, who live in cold countries and who must exert
much more effort at work. An hour's work under the Philippine sun, he says, is
equivalent to a day's work in temperate regions.
3. Based on historical facts, cite specific examples of Dr. Rizal’s indusriousness.
1) By non-cooperation;
2) By not giving them provisions and food supplies; and,
3) By not providing them with any helper or labourer.
4. As a present citizen of our country, explain some possible reasons why rue
economic and social progress may take time to be achieved.
 Economic growth has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and
improved the lives of many more over the last half-century. Yet it is increasingly
evident that a model of human development based on economic progress alone is
incomplete. A society which fails to address basic human needs, equip citizens to
improve their quality of life, protect the environment, and provide opportunity for
many of its citizens is not succeeding. Inclusive growth requires both economic
and social progress.
5. Give at least three suggested ways of developing your and other Filipino citizen’s
love for work or industriousness.
 Be hardworking always on your work
 Don’t be lazy on your work
 Be polite
 Keep Yourself Well-Informed.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 6.3

Present Realities:

Directions: Follow the instruction and answer the following.

1. Give the difference between an “educated person” and an “intelligent person”.
 Educated people are caught in a paradigm, but they're good at that paradigm.
Intelligent people get it at a deeper level. They understand the why and the how
more deeply. They can sometimes see how things work at at basic level and can
fix both basic and complex problems.
2. What are the benificial efffects of education to one’s personal and professional
growth to Filipinos living in a globalized environment?
 Better Communication. Critical Thinking Skills. Identification of Skills. Greater
Sense of Discipline.
3. Is education the possible solution to violence, greed, lack of discipline, lack of
objectivity and criminality in society? Support your answer with specific examples.
 Education is an effective way to reduce crime and combat adversity. Instead of
harsher laws to prevent crime, individuals can attain productivity in society with
training and education. This can reduce the murder and crime rates, decrease the
number of inmates in prison, and save both resources and money.
4. Name some historical facts that show Dr. Jose Rizal’s love for educatioon.
 Perhaps Rizal's appreciation of education was influenced by his mother, Doña
Teodora Alonzo. His mother was considered his first teacher. At the age of three
he learned the alphabet and also taught him to appreciate Spanish poetry. He even
recognized the importance of industrial education as well.

5. Did Dr. Jose Rizal’s famous essays and poems reflect his good education? Explain
your answer.
 Yes, because if you're going to read his poems you will see that he's really well

LEARNING ACTIVITY 6.1
1. How culture industry can become a main phenomenon of late capitalism?
Culture industry is one which incorporates all products and form of light entertainment –
from Hollywood films to elevator music. The design of all these forms of popular culture
are meant to satisfy the growing needs of mass capitalistic consumers for entertainment.
Adorno and Horkheimer specifically notes that the term "culture industry" was chosen
over "mass culture" in order to make sure that it is not understood as something which
spontaneously comes from the masses themselves. If these products of the culture
economy take the appearance of artwork but are in fact dependant on industry and
economy, they are subjected to the interests of money and power. All products of the
culture industry are designed for profit. This means that every work of art is turned into a
consumer product and is shaped by the logic of capitalist rationality (i.e. whatever sells
best). Art is no longer autonomous, but is rather a commodified product of the economic
relations of production.

2. Does culture industry positions the masses ad objects of manipulation?

Of course, it is also a means of satisfying their wants and needs. At the end of the day,
this people turns into a passive and subordinated subjects, unable to fully take critical
responsibility for their own action, a thing which is crucial for a functioning democracy.
People therefore gladly give in a help maintain the system by taking part in it. In the article,
I think Adorno and Horkheimer stress the fact that culture industry uses a production-line
mentality in producing cultural products. Seemingly all films and TV shows we watch are
different, but in fact they follow the same recycled formulas as in other types of consumer
goods. Like consumers goods, it feels like "there is something for everyone" here but in
fact it's all variations of the same thing. This is a main feature of the culture industry, for
the fact that all products are produced under the same scheme allows them to be
"readable" and effortlessly digested. This is how culture industry imposes conformity –
with things that only seem to be different but are in fact all (slight) variations of the same
thing. The final argument posed by Adorno and Horkheimer is that people under
capitalism suffer the same fate of art under the culture industry – they are reduced to the
exchange value with no intrinsic or unique traits as the Enlightenment dreamed.
