Page #1: Torsion of a compound shaft

This project investigates the torsional behavior of a compound shaft using different materials to facilitate
selecting the most appropriate material for a particular design.

Assignment:

The compound shaft shown in Figure 1 drives several pulleys (see below or click on Project Figures).

Figure 1: Compound Shaft Geometry and Loading

Tubes (1) and (2) are hollow tubes with an outside diameter of 3.000 in. and a wall thickness of 0.125 in.

Tubes (3) and (4) are solid and have a diameter equal to 1.50 in. Assume the bearings/supports shown
allow the shaft to turn freely.

Consider the following possibilities of material to be used:

a. Aluminum 6063 T6

b. Red Brass (UNS C23000)

c. Structural Steel ASTM A500 Gr. B

d. Structural Steel ASTM A53 Gr. B

(a) Using DataVis, determine the shear strength of all materials mentioned above. Plot the shear
strength values using the DataVis graph tool and compare values. Click the "Add Visualization"
button, select "One Property,” and then select shear strength to create the graph. Then use the
search box in the “Select Materials” panel to locate the 4 materials above and "star" them, so they
are easy to locate on the graph. You can then change the display settings if you want to only see
these 4 materials on the graph.

(b) Using DataVis, determine the shear modulus (modulus of rigidity) of all materials mentioned
above. Plot the shear modulus values using the DataVis graph tool and compare values. Click the
"Add Visualization" button, click "One Property," and then select shear modulus to create the
graph. The materials already starred will now be visible on both graphs.

(c) Determine the maximum shear stress in the compound shaft.

(d) Determine the rotation angle of flange C with respect to pulley A.

(e) Determine the rotation angle of pulley E with respect to pulley A.

(f) Based on the results above, select the most appropriate material to be used for this compound
shaft.
