A sect is a group that has branched out from its “parent religion”, retaining some
aspects of the religion, but working to amend those aspects with which the group
disagrees. A cult, on the other hand, establishes an identity for itself. Aspects of
this identity can either be taken in from a different group or truly created by the
cult themselves.
2. Give one example of each of the five dimensions of religiosity, using examples not given
in the text.
a. Belief: God created the world in six days; the seventh he took to rest.
b. Ritual: Washing the body before entering a mosque.
c. Intellectual Dimension: Learning and singing hymns.
d. Experience: Feeling the temptations of the Devil in everyday life.
e. Consequences: Choosing forgiveness in all instances, as it would be the way of
Jesus.
