DRUG & IVF COMPUTATION

1. The doctor ordered Ampicillin sodium 150 mg IV every 6 hours. The medication label reads 1g
and reconstitute with 7.4 ml of bacteriostatic H20. How many ml will you need to draw up for a
dose?

2. A 25lb child was ordered Tylenol 115mg PO every 4 hours as needed for pain. How many ml
would you administer? (Tylenol 160mg/5ml)

3. Your patient weighs 22kgs and you are ordered to infuse 250 mg dobutamine in 500ml Normal
Saline at 10mcg/kg/min. How many milligrams of dobutamine will infuse per hour?

4. The order is 500 mg of Rocephin to be taken by a 15.4 lb infant every 8 hours. The medication
label shows that 75-150 mg/kg per day is the appropriate dosage range. How much will the
patient receive per day? Is this within normal range?

5. The order is: Penicillin G 1.2 million units IM daily. Available: Penicillin G 9 million units/1 ml.
How many ml(s) will you give?
6. Doctor’s order: 2L of D5 ½ Normal saline with 50 mEq Potassium Chloride to infuse over 48
hours. Compute for the flow rate.

7. Your patient is a 4-year-old who weighs 48 pounds. His physician orders a daily maintenance
dose of digoxin pediatric elixir 250 mcg PO. The drug is supplied in a 60 mL bottle containing 50
mcg/mL. Questions:

(a). According to your drug reference, the recommended daily maintenance oral dosage for a child age 2
years to age 5 years is 7.5 – 10 mcg/kg. Is the 250 mcg dose a safe dose using recommended mcg/kg?

(b). The child’s doctor writes a new order for digoxin pediatric elixir 200 mcg PO. Is this dose within safe
and effective limits for this child?

(c). How many mL of digoxin pediatric elixir containing 50 mcg/mL will you prepare to administer a 200
mcg dose?
