A. TEST PROCEDURE AND CHECKLIST

Measure and record intercell and terminal connection resistance upon

SAES-P-103
A1 installation.
Sec. 3.2
ANSI/IEEE Std 1106-2005 Sec 9.2 (b)

Perform a check and record of the following:

(1) Float voltage measured at the battery terminals
(2) General appearance and cleanliness of the battery, the battery rack,
and the battery rack area
(3) Charger output current and voltage
SAES-P-103
A2 (4) Electrolyte levels
Sec. 3.2
(5) Cracks in cells or leakage of electrolyte
(6) Any evidence of corrosion at terminals, connectors, or rack
(7) Adequacy of ventilation
(8) Pilot cell electrolyte temperature
ANSI/IEEE Std 1106-2005 Sec. 7.2.1

Check that whether any cell electrolyte reached the low-level line, water
should be added to bring all cells to the high-level line. SAES-P-103
A3 Water quality should be in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Sec. 3.2
ANSI/IEEE Std 1106-2005 Annex C.2

When the float voltage, measured at the battery terminals, is outside of

its recommended operating range, the charger voltage should be SAES-P-103
A4
adjusted. ANSI/IEEE Std 1106-2005 Sec. 7.3.1(b) Sec. 3.2

When corrosion, excessive dirt, or potassium carbonate (gray 1 white

deposits) are noted on cells or connectors, wipe with a wet cloth, then
wipe dry and coat metal parts with corrosion inhibitor as recommended SAES-P-103
A5
by the manufacturer. Sec. 3.2
ANSI/IEEE Std 1106-2005 Sec. 7.3.1(d)

Procedures for field acceptance, performance and modified performance

test: a) Set
up load and the necessary instrumentation to maintain the test discharge
rate b)
Disconnect the charging source, connect the load to the battery, start
timing and continue to maintain the selected discharge rate.

voltage
d) Maintain the discharge rate, and record the elapsed time at the
point when the battery terminal voltage decreases to a value equal to the
minimum average voltage per cell as specified by the design of the
installation (e.g., 1.10VPC) times the number of cell per string.
ANSI/IEEE Std 1106-2005 Sec. 9.5

Observe the battery for abnormal intercell connector heating. SAES-P-103

B. TEST EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS CRITERIA

1. Use digital low resistance ohmmeters or measurement of millivolt drop during capacity testing.

2. When working on the electrical connections to the batteries, insulated tools should be used. (PE 1-2003 Sec. 2.5.10)

3. The instruments used for voltage measurement shall be voltmeters of an accuracy class equal to 0,5 or better. The resistance of the voltmeters used
shall be at least 1 kΩ/V (see IEC 60051 or IEC 60485).
4. The instruments used for current measurement shall be ammeters of an accuracy class equal to 0,5 or better. The entire assembly of ammeter, shunt
and leads shall be of an accuracy class of 0,5 or better (see IEC 60051 or refer to IEC 60359).
5. For measuring temperature, thermometers shall be used having a suitable measuring range in which the value of each graduated division is not in excess
of 1 °C. The absolute accuracy of the instruments shall be at least 1 °C.

6. For measuring electrolyte densities, hydrometers or other instruments shall be used with scales so graduated that the value of each division is not in
excess of 5 kg/m3. The absolute accuracy of the instruments shall be at least 5 kg/m3.

7. For measurement of time, the instruments’ accuracy shall be ±1% or better.

8. The test equipment calibration cycle shall not exceed twelve months.
