ABSTRACT

The user guide shows step by step


procedure to access remote lab facilities
that students will use to practice and
complete design assignments.

USER GUIDE
REMOTE LAB
This manual covers the basic steps that the user needs to carry out to connect to the Remote Lab,
as part of the course on Internet of Things. The Remote Lab is set up at BITS-Pilani, K K Birla
Goa Campus. The lab is equipped with high-end computing systems to cater to the software and
hardware requirements of this course.

Note:
• The Remote lab is accessible for 23 hours of a day. (12 noon-1 pm is reserved for system
maintenance)
• Each participant will be provided a maximum of 4 hours of access to lab per week.
Every week starts from Sunday and ends on Saturday
• If the booked slot is not utilized by the participant due to any reason, it will not be
possible to allot extra slots to the participant. Hence you are requested to prepare
the schedule in advance.
• You MUST have BITS ID and password for http://rlab-embedded.bits-pilani.ac.in to
access the lab.
• It is preferable to use Google chrome Browser. Enable pop up option in browser
• If your internet connection is inside a firewall, enable port 80, 81, 8001 to 8015.
• High speed internet connection, preferably above 4 Mbps.

Steps:
• Go to http://rlab-embedded.bits-pilani.ac.in. Enter your BITS ID and password to login.
For login instructions refer to “click here for login instructions”.

• After successful login, you are connected to the webpage for remote lab in embedded
systems domain as shown below
• Then click on remote lab
• Select the course in which you are enrolled. Here the example is given for course-- Internet of
Things

• Click on “Book Now” button. You will find a time slot booking calendar in the same tab as
shown below.

Note:
1) All slots are in Indian standard time.
2) Booking can be done 6 days in advance only.
3) Booking can be cancelled by clicking on my booking option called cancelled

• Each Yellow box shows a time slot of 2 hour. The box with yellow color shows available
time slots or sessions. All time slots are in IST. Read the instructions carefully given on page.
• You are allowed to book a maximum of eight hours in a week based upon your
convenience.
• For booking slot(s), click on the yellow box. It displays a message “your session has
been booked successfully”, (if you have not already exhausted your time slots), else you
would get a pop up message, “reached max sessions for the week”.
• Every week starts from Sunday and ends on Saturday. Assume you book your first Session
on Friday. As the week ends on Saturday, you are allowed to book any available four hours
in the week.
• After a session(s) is booked, the box (s) turn green, and you can access the experiment
ONLY during your booked time slots. Click on “close” to exit from the Calendar.
• You can cancel an advance booked session by clicking on my booking option called
cancelled. The green box would turn yellow and a pop message would be displayed to
confirm the Cancellation of your booking. You cannot cancel the slot if the booked slot is in
progress or once the booked duration has elapsed.
• The technical support email-ID and contact numbers are given HELP in social proton.
• To Connect to remote lab click on software access
• Then click on LAUNCH INTERNET OF_THINGS-
• Then we have to click on RDP and download the RDP file. Snapshot given below

• After downloading the file we have to save the file in system
• Then run this RDP file

• Then click on connect


• System will show the login credential with the username and password


• Then Click Ok
• The remote desktop will connect click yes


o You will now view the remote system desktop. Click on camera icon and
“light shortcut” app to view the connected IoT hardware and remaining time
for your slot.
• Open the camera app from taskbar to view the connected
hardware.
• If hardware image appears dark, open the ligh app . A pop up as shown below will
appear

• Click on “Turn ON” icon to switch-ON the LED light connected over the hardware. The
hardware should appear as shown below.
The timer count on “Turn-ON light” shows the remaining time for your session, after which
the session gets automatically disconnected.

• Perform the experiments as per guidelines from the instructor. For the testing of system
(April 18th to April 21st) also view the video provided to check your connectivity to
remote lab and accessibility to the kit.
• Make sure to save your work on your personal system before exiting. Refer “File
Transfer” section for more details.
• Save work by creating a folder with your ID in “FTP FOLDER/IOT/” only. You may not
get the same system during your next slot access, if you saved files elsewhere, they
would not be visible.
• Note: the user can copy and paste files to-fro from their system to remote PC.
• The session is automatically disconnected once the time slot gets over. Make sure you
save the work on your personal system before the session expires.
• To open FTP Folder Username: embeddedlab Password = Embedded@1234
• Now you can transfer files (drag and drop local files into IOT folder) from your local
system to remote system and vice versa by copying your files in IOT folder on ftp server.
• The shared ftp folder can be accessed from any setup 1 to 5.
