MUSIC of CORDILLERA, MINDORO, PALAWAN and the VISAYAS

Background Information for Learners


Cordillera Vocal music is related to different occasions such as life cycle events,
occupational activities and various rituals. Its characteristics are melismatic, a vocal
passage with one syllable but sung against several note passages and free meter meaning its
musical meter has no time signature.. Instrumental music are played during ceremonies,
rituals and celebrations. Their music is distinctively made up of two sound characteristics of
instruments based on the materials. The metal instruments and the bamboo instruments.
Mindoro Vocal music is used for communication with the spirits in rituals and worship,
weddings, works, courtships, festive occasion and lullabies. Their instrumental music is used
during festivals, rituals, courtship and daily activities
Palawan Vocal music is characterized by imitation of sounds from nature and the
environment. Also highly influenced by the native language of the province. Their music
performed by the gong ensemble plays an important role in the life of the community
because it is performed in rituals. Instrumental music plays the movement and sound of
nature. The instruments are made of bamboo, wood, strings and metals.
Vsayan music is highly influence by the Spaniards because they colonized the Philippines
for a very long time. Spaniard musician introduced new style of music which has also
Western musical traditions. Vocal music of the Visayas has different functions in the lives of
the people. The songs include children’s song, lullabies, ballad. Working song and serenade.
Instrumental music has different musical ensembles with their respective sounds reflect not
only the enthusiastic musical involvement of the Visayan people but also their sentiments,
way of life and interactions with their environment and other people.

DUAL SPORTS: Badminton & Table Tennis
Background Information for Learners
Dual Sports are played by two people opposing each other.
Badminton is a racket sport played on a court divided by a net five feet high. It is
played with a shuttlecock (bird). Could be played both indoor or outdoors. Can be played as
singles or doubles. Its objective is to hit the shuttlecock over the net so that eventually the
opponent is unable to return the shot. It is formerly known as “Poona” , “Battledore”,
“Shuttlecock” and later on it was called Badminton. It was in 1992 Barcelona Olympics
when it became an Olympic Sports. It is governed by the Badminton World Federation.
Basic Strokes or Hits
1.CLEAR –a shot done with the stroke above the head, the shuttle travelling up targeting
the long service line; usually done to give the player time to return to base position
2.LOB-shot done with the stroke below the head about waist-level, the shuttle traveling up
3.DROP- shot usually done with the stroke above the head, the shuttle travelling up but
dropping just near the net, usually done for placing purposes.
4.Net drop/shot- shot usually done with the stroke below the head, the shuttle travelling
just barely touching the net and landing near it; usually done for placing purposes
5.DRIVE- shot usually done with the stroke about the level of the head, the shuttle
travelling straight or flat over the net
6.SMASH – shot done with the stroke above the head, the shuttle travelling down with
power and speed, considered one of the most powerful attack in badminton.
Table Tennis on the other hand began in 1880’s in England when lawn tennis
players adapted their game to play indoors during the winter. Ping-pong was invented by
the English manufacturer J. Jaques and Son at the end of the 1880’sand later
trademarked in the United States by Parker Brother, the Brand Game Company. In 1902,
a visiting Japanese University Professor took the game back to Japan where he introduced
it to university students. The objective of this game is to hit the ball that it goes over the
net and bounces on the opponent’s half of the table. International Table Tennis Federation
governs the sports.
Basic Hits
1. Serve – a stroke that starts a rally; can be either done in the forehand or backhand
stroke
2. Receive – a stroke reply to a serve
3. Push – a short stroke wherein the racket is moved in a slight horizontal plane,
striking the ball on the bottom portion of the racket.
4. Drive – a stroke wherein the racket is moved forward and upwards at an angle,
striking the ball to impart topspin
5. Block – a stroke wherein the racket is positioned slightly vertical, striking the ball
on the bottom portion of the racket making the ball travel straight.
Both sports uses the forehand grip and backhand grip. They both have the same
matches. Singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Background Information for Learners:


Being a Grade 7 student, at the age of 11 to 13 years old, you are under the stage of
life called ADOLESCENCE.
This stage of growth occur the most in an individual. It changes the life style of the
person and it requires the proper amount of energy and nutrients to help your body grow
properly. You had a healthful diet to fuel and supply energy that manages the changes and
cope with the uncertain situations.
NUTRITION – is the science that deals with the process of taking in food and using it for
growth, metabolism and repair. Good nutrition depends in the combination of food having
the required different nutrients we should take on a daily basis. Excess or deficient intake
of some nutrients may lead to illnesses
NUTRIENTS –are chemical compounds in food which is essential to life and health,
providing us with energy, building blocks for repair and growth and substances
Why Is Adolescents’ Nutrition Important?
The changes in growth and development during adolescence create increased
demand for energy and nutrients. As an adolescent, your total nutrient needs are higher at
this stage than at any other stage in your life cycle. It only shows that nutrition and
physical growth are essentially releated.
