1.1. Introduction
With the effect of globalization, the form of the markets has been changed all around the
world, as well as it has also changed the way in which business is carried out in the past years. One of
the major revolutions, as a part of globalization, is the foreign trade that implies the buying and
selling of goods and services, in different countries of the world.
Next, there is one more drastic change as a result of globalization, i.e. foreign investment, where in
the individuals and companies invest their capital in the companies headquartered in another nation.
Both foreign trade and foreign investment brings external capital to the country which triggers the
growth of the nation. Let’s take a look at the given article, to understand the difference between
foreign trade and foreign investment

1.2. Definition of Foreign Trade

Foreign trade can be understood as the act of trading products and services in the international
markets. It facilitates the availability of goods in the market of the country, different from where it is
produced. It results in the increase of choice of goods, as the prices of the similar goods are almost
equal. Therefore, the producers compete with one another.
Foreign trade is needed in a country to fulfil its resource requirements, meaning that the trade
between two countries takes place because no country is self-sufficient.
So, to meet out its requirement of natural or man-made resources, it engages in trade with the country,
which possesses these resources in abundance. Further, the countries that are rich in certain minerals
or other items find it beneficial to export it to other countries.
Foreign trade occurs in the form of import, export and entreport.
Foreign trade is subject to trade policy which are the directive principles and the control measures,
that helps in administering the exports and imports of the country.

1.3. Definition of Foreign Investment

Foreign investment implies investment made by foreign nationals or foreign corporates in
substantial proportion in the domestic company, in that they hold extensive ownership and also
controls the management of the company.
 In short, foreign investment is the introduction of foreign capital in a company which is based in a
different country. So, it results in the movement of capital from one country to another. It can be in
the form of:
 Foreign Direct Investment: Investment from a source outside the nation, into the production
or business of a company.
 Foreign Portfolio Investment: Investment by the foreign company, in the securities market of
another country

1.4. Conclusion
Both foreign trade and foreign investment leads to the increase in country’s Gross
Domestic Product (GDP), which becomes an important source of economy’s development.
To sum up, foreign trade involves buying and selling of goods and services; in international
markets, foreign investment is all about money invested for the long-term by foreign companies.
2. Law on foreign investment in Viet Nam
In order to expand economic co-coperation with foreing countries and to support the cause of
modernization, industrialization and development of the national economy on the basis of the efficient
exploitation and utilization of national resources;
In accordance with the 1992 Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; This Law makes
provisions for foreign direct investment in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
Article 1
The State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam encourages foreign investors to invest in
Vietnam on the basis of respect for the independence and sovereignty of Vietnam, observance of its
law, equality and mutual benefit.
The State of Vietnam protects the ownership of invested capital and other legal rights of foreign
investors, provides favourable conditions and formulates simple and prompt procedures for foreign
investors investing in Vietnam.

Theo số liệu mới nhất từ Cục Đầu tư nước ngoài, Bộ Kế hoạch và Đầu tư, tính chung trong 12 tháng
năm 2017, tổng vốn đăng ký cấp mới, tăng thêm và góp vốn mua cổ phần của nhà đầu tư nước ngoài
là 35,88 tỷ USD, tăng 44,4% so với cùng kỳ năm 2016. Vốn thực hiện ước đạt 17,5 tỷ USD, tăng
10,8% so với cùng kỳ năm 2016.
Cụ thể, cả nước hiện có 2.600 dự án mới được cấp giấy chứng nhận đầu tư với tổng vốn đăng ký 21,3
tỷ USD. 1.188 lượt dự án đăng ký điều chỉnh vốn đầu tư với tổng vốn đăng ký tăng thêm xấp xỉ 8,41
tỷ USD. Lượt góp vốn, mua cổ phần của nhà đầu tư nước ngoài, 12 tháng qua Việt Nam có 5.002 lượt
dự án, với tổng giá trị góp vốn 6,19 tỷ USD.
Công nghiệp chế biến, chế tạo vẫn là lĩnh vực thu hút được nhiều sự quan tâm của nhà đầu tư nước
ngoài với tổng số vốn 15,87 tỷ USD, chiếm 44,2% tổng vốn đầu tư đăng ký. 
Sản xuất, phân phối điện đứng thứ hai với tổng vốn đầu tư là 8,37 tỷ USD, chiếm 23,3% tổng vốn đầu
tư đăng ký. 
Đứng thứ ba là lĩnh vực kinh doanh bất động sản với tổng vốn đầu tư đăng ký 3,05 tỷ USD, chiếm
8,5% tổng vốn đầu tư đăng ký.
Ba địa phương thu hút FDI nhiều nhất là Tp.HCM với 6,5 tỷ USD, Bắc Ninh (3,4 tỷ USD), Thanh
Hoá (3,17 tỷ USD).
Theo đối tác đầu tư, có 115 quốc gia và vùng lãnh thổ có dự án đầu tư tại Việt Nam. Trong đó Nhật
Bản đứng vị trí thứ nhất với tổng vốn đầu tư 9,11 tỷ USD, chiếm 25,4% tổng vốn đầu tư. 
Vị trí này vốn dĩ Hàn Quốc soán lĩnh từ năm 2016 khi đầu tư hai dự án tỷ USD của Samsung tại Bắc
Ninh, Thái Nguyên và LG tại Hải Phòng. Trong nhiều tháng đầu năm của năm 2017, Hàn Quốc vẫn
dẫn đầu trong nhóm các nhà đầu tư lớn nhất vào Việt Nam.
Tuy nhiên, cuối năm nhiều dự án lớn tỷ USD của Nhật Bản đầu tư vào nhiệt điện giúp các nhà đầu tư
đến từ xứ sở hoa anh đào lấy lại "ngôi vương" như: Dự án nhà máy nhiệt điện BOT Nghi Sơn 2, dự án
Nhà máy nhiệt điện BOT Vân Phong 1 và dự án nhà máy nhiệt điện BOT Nam Định 1 đều do các nhà
đầu tư Nhật Bản tham gia.
Hiện, Hàn Quốc đứng thứ hai với tổng vốn đầu tư đăng ký 8,49 tỷ USD, chiếm 23,7% tổng vốn đầu
tư vào Việt Nam. Singapore đứng vị trí thứ ba với tổng vốn đầu tư đăng ký 5,3 tỷ USD, chiếm 14,8%
tổng vốn đầu tư.
