What are suffixes?

A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word


and changes the word's meaning.

Ex: comfort---- comfortable


person---- personal
celebrate---- celebration
decide---- decision
• Changing nouns into adjectives
The simplest way to change a noun into an adjective is to add suffixes to the end of the
root word (the word before adding a suffix or a prefix) . The most common suffixes used to
create adjectives are:

-al, -ful, -less, -ous and -able


1. -al

Ex: nature---- natural


magic---- magical
person---- personal

Ex: beauty---- beautiful


harm---- harmful
success---- successful
care---- careful

• Changing verbs into nouns

We change a verb into a noun by adding suffixes to the end of the root word (the word
before adding a suffix or a prefix) . Some of the common suffixes used to create nouns from
verbs are:

- tion and -sion
