SECTION 05720

SPACE FRAME

PART 1- GENERAL

1.01 WORK INCLUDED

A. The extent of the metal space framework is shown on the drawings.

B. The metal space frame work includes, in addition to the above note
requirements, the following:
1. Engineering design of space frames and accessories, including structural
calculation.
2. Packaging and delivery to job's site by space frame manufacturer.
3. Erection by or under the responsibility of the space frame manufacturer.

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Erector
Space frames shall be erected, either;
1. By space frame manufacturer, or
2. Under the supervision of a Resident Technical Advisor from the
manufacturer by installers experienced in the work.

B. Design Criteria

1. Design space frames from the spans and overhangs shown on drawing.
2. Space frame systems shall consist of steel tubes and nodes (spherical
connectors)
Joints using gusset plates shall not be used
Structure shall be demountable.
3. Design space frames for the following structural requirements:
One. Live load: 1.0 KN/m2
Two. Dead load: to be determined by manufacturer
Three. Inward and outward wind load : as follows

0-9 m 650 N/ m2
9-15 m 1000 N/ m2
15-30 m 1400 N/ m2
30-100 m 1500 N/ m2
Four. Temperature variation: 0 Deg. C to 70 Deg. C.
Five. Seismic loading: as Uniform Building Code, Seismic Zone.
Six. All loadings shall be applied through space flame nodes, not via
bending of tubular members

C. Allowable Tolerances

One. Deviation after erection of any member from the correct theoretical
position in the space module shall not exceed the lesser of:

- 0.05% of length of member
- 1 mm

Two. Quality Control


Test load the following at the factory to twice the permitted load;
Nodes
Tubes
Bolts

1.04 SUBMITTALS

A. Samples

Submit two full size samples of each type of node with connecting member

B. Structural Calculations

1. In time to meet the construction programme arid prior to commencement of


fabrication submit two copies of structural calculations prepared by
specialist for review

2. Prepare calculations in accordance with current design rules of:

3. Calculations shall include:


One. Analysis for wind and dead toad on members
Two. Frame connectors
Three. Proposed fabrication and erection tolerances,
Four. Connections to structural supports

4. Show section properties computations for framing members

5. Submit full size drawings of connection devices

6. Existing test reports are not acceptable in lieu of calculations.

C. Fabrication Drawings

1. In time to meet the construction programme, prior to commencement of


fabrication, and after Architect's review of structural calculations, submit
two copies of shop drawings for fabrication of space frames

2. Shop drawings shall include;


One. Layout, details and schedules for fabrication of members and
connections
Two. Accurately dimensioned layout of space frame in relation to adjacent
and contiguous walls, columns, beams and slabs. Details and data to
show provisions for vertical and horizontal expansion contraction of
space frames.
Three. Identification of all materials an all attachment devices and
accessories.
Four. Details of supporting members for other work to be attached to, or
supported by space frame, including sliding bearings.

D. Erection Drawings

1. In time to meet the construction programme, prior to commencement of


fabrication, arid after Architect's review of fabrications drawings submit two
copies of a detailed set of site erection drawings.

2. Drawings shall:
One. Identify each part of assembly by size or assembly jumper
designations.
Two. Describe methods for erecting space frames including;
- Sequence of installation
- Connection of members
- Attachment to other construction
Three. Show relationship to other construction
Four. Include templates and directions for installation for installation of
anchorage in other work

E. Test Reports

Submit two copies of certificates showing that products comply with


quality control requirements.

1.05 PRODUCT DELIVERY STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Generally:

Store, handle and deliver factory finished units to ensure delivery to site
free from scratches and other damage and corrosion,

B. Delivery

1. If shipping by sea, arrange shipments in an inside location, not as deck


cargo.
2. Label each crate to identify components and include detailed inventory in
each crate cross-referenced to component coding or identification system.
3. Time deliveries to ensure uninterrupted progress of work.

C. Storage

Store materials to provide easy access for inspection and identification,

PART 2- PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Generally Components shall be manufacturer's standard components, sized for


the specified structural requirements.

B. Tube

1. Commercial quality structure steel tubing.

2. Tube materials shall be to one of the following:

a. ASTM A-sot and ASTM A-618


b. DIN 17200 Grade ST 37 or ST52
c. BS4360, Grade 43C,50C
C. Nodes
1. Hot forged solid steel spheres, or similar approved.
2. Nodes shall be to:

a. ASTM -668, Class A material normalised, or


b. DIN 17200, Grade 45 Minimum yield stress 34 Kg/sq. mm
c. If required to be welded, DIN 17100, Grade ST-52-3

D. Bolts

1. To be to:
a. ASTM-A-490, or
b. DIN 13 and DN 267
c. Strength classifications 5~6, 8.8 or 10.9

E. Anchor Plates
1. Galvanized steel to AST 36.

2.02 FABRICATION

A. Referencing

1. Code each component for easy identification and erection on sit.

2. Cross reference coding to shop and erection drawings and to shipping lists.

B. Shop Finishing

1. Space frames, accessories and other members shall be hot dip galvanized
after fabrication.

2. Threaded components shall zinc plated.

3. Tubes shall be hot dipped galvanized. minimum 80 microns thick. Joints


shall be electro-galvanized, minimum 25 microns thick.

4. Components shall further receive a baked on finish, minimum 80 microns


thick, to give a minimum life expectancy of 10 years. Coating material to be
an unmodified Polyester II powder.

5. Finishing colour to be approved by the Engineer

PART 3- EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. Generally
1. Ensure that space frame supports and their horizontal stabilization are
suitable.

2. Do not proceed unit; unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.02 ERECTION

A. Generally

1. Erect space frame and accessories in accordance drawings and the


manufacturer's instructions.

2. Erect space frame from scaffolding and crane position.

3. Temporarily brace and support space frame as erection to ensure stability.

B. Tubes and Nodes

1. Connect by bolting.
Erect to true line and level.
2. Ensure members are not forced in position, to prevent secondary stresses

3. Tighten bolts correctly and in accordance with manufacturer's


recommendations.

4. Mount horizontal members so that connection and water from holes point
downward.

3.03 CLEANING AND ADJUSTMENT


A. Protection
1. Protect completed space frames in accordance with manufacturer's
instructions to prevent damage of deterioration, whilst subsequent work is
executed.
