2.02 MATERIALS

SQEC Document - III / 2 SECTION 05520 / 2

A. General : Provide metal free from pitting, seam marks, roller marks, stains ,
dis-coloration and other imperfections where exposed to view on finished
units.
B. Stainless Steel :
1. Tubing : ASTM A 554, Grade MT 316L
2. Pipe : ASTM A 312, Grade TP 31 6L
3. Plate : ASTM A 666, type 316L
4. Castings : ASTM A 743
C. Brackets, Flanges and Anchors: Case or formed metal of same type of
material and finish as supported rails, unless otherwise indicated.
A. Anchors and Inserts: Either furnish inserts to be set in concrete and masonry
work, or provide other anchoring devices as required for the installation of
condition shown as recommended by the manufacturer unless otherwise
indicated. Furnish hot-dip galvanized inserts. Provide toothed steel expansion
bolt devices for drilled-in-place anchors.
2.02 FABRICATION
A. Fabricate to design, dimensions and details shown. Provide handrails
and railing members in sizes and profiles indicated with supporting
posts and brackets of size and spacing shown but not less than
required to comply with the requirements indicated for structural
performance. Use proven details of fabrication, as required to achieve
proper assembly and alignment of the various components of the work.

B. Verify dimensions by field measurement before fabrication wherever

work adjoins other work that precedes it in construction. Do not delay
job progress; allow for trimming and fitting of metal fabrication work
wherever the taking of field measurements before fabrication might
delay the work. On shop drawings note which dimensions have been
verified by field measurement.
C. Weld comers and seams continuously and in accordance with the
recommendations of AWS. Grind exposed welds smooth and flush, to
match and blend with adjoining surfaces.

D. Form exposed connections with hairline joints which are flush and
smooth, using concealed fasteners wherever possible. Use exposed
fasteners of the type shown, or if not shown, use Phillips flat-head
(countersunk) screws or bolts.
E. Provide brackets, flanges, plates, straps, anchors and miscellaneous
fittings with each assembly, as may be required for interconnection of
handrail and railing members to other work.
F. Predrill bolt and/or screw holes as shown and as required for
attachment of metal fabrication work and for the attachment of
adjacent materials.
G. Where shown as galvanized, complete the shop fabrication prior to
application of the coating. Remove mill scale and rust, clean and
pickle the units as required for coating. Apply hot-dip zinc coating of
0.6 kg/m2 in accordance with ASTM A 123.
H. In tubular members, where mechanical joints are necessary, use
bar-stock inserts with flat-head screws located on the least visible

surfaces. Where bends are shown, form members to a smooth,
uniform radius without distortion of the cross-sectional shape.
I. Mitre and cope members at comers and intersections. Bevel, weld and
grind smooth without fillets to form smooth transitions and maintain
sharp lines.
J. For railing posts set in concrete, provide preset sleeves of galvanized
steel not less than 150mm long and inside dimensions not less than
15mm greater than outside dimensions of post with steel plate forming
bottom closure, unless shown otherwise.
2.03 RAILING SYSTEMS
A. Fabricate metal railings/ handrails inside stair-wells from the following
materials, unless otherwise shown on the drawings:
1. Stainless steel tubing.
2. Provide all required connections, mounting brackets, supports, clips,
etc., of Stainless steel construction unless shown otherwise.
2.04 FINISHES
A. Stainless Steel Finish: Satin finish
B. As shown on Drawings.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A. Examine the substrate and conditions under which the handrail and
railing system are to be installed. Do not proceed with the installation
until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a manner
acceptable to the Engineer.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Coordinate setting drawings, diagrams, templates, instructions, and
directions for installation of anchorages, such as sleeves, concrete
inserts, anchor bolts, and miscellaneous items having integral
anchors, which are to be embedded in concrete as masonry
construction. Coordinate delivery of such items to project site.
B. Field Measurements: Take field measurements prior to fabrication.
C. Unless otherwise shown, insert posts in preset sleeves cast into
concrete and fill annular space between post and sleeve solid with
non shrink, non metallic grout mixed and placed to comply with the
manufacturer's directions.
D. Provide removable railing sections where indicated using slip fit metal
sockets. Accurately locate sockets to match post spacing.
E. Fit exposed connections accurately together to form tight hairline
joints.
F. Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installation of handrails
and railing systems. Set work accurately in location, alignment, and
elevation, plumb, level, true, and free of rack, measured from
established lines and levels. Do not weld, cut, or abrade surfaces of
handrails and railing components which have been coated or finished

after fabrication and are intended for field connection by mechanical
means without further cutting or fitting.
G. Anchor railing ends with manufacturer's standard fittings using
concealed fasteners, unless otherwise indicated.
H. Handrails to wails shall be secured with manufacturer's standard wall
brackets and end fittings, unless otherwise indicated. Use drilled in
expansion shields with concealed hanger bolts, unless otherwise
indicated.
I. Separate dissimilar metals with di-electric separator to prevent
molecular breakdown.

3.03 PROTECTION
A. Protect finishes of railing systems and handrails from damage during
construction period by use of temporary protective coverings approved
by railing manufacturer. Remove protective covering when there is no
longer any danger of damage to the system.
B. Restore finishes damaged during installation and construction period
so that no evidence remains of correction work. Return items which
cannot be refinished in the field to the shop; make required alterations
and refinish entire unit, or provide new units as required.
C. Protect installed works from all damages until substantial completion
of works.
