TECHNOLOGY STANDARD 1 – Basic Computer/Technology Operations and Concepts:

The competent teacher will use computer systems to run software; to access, generate,

and manipulate data; and to publish results. He or she will also evaluate performance of

hardware and software components of computer systems and apply basic

troubleshooting strategies as needed.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard—put the

standard into your own words.

This standards goal is to have teachers understand how important basic knowledge about

technology is. To me, it is pushing teachers to change gears and incorporate more technology in

the classroom. In an age where students are surrounded by technology, it is vital that teachers

know their way around a computer and its software so they can relate their teaching to their

students better. Students are now wired to learn best with technology and it is only fair that

teachers know how to work these programs to give them the best education.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The artifact I chose incorporates different kinds of basic computer knowledge in one program. It

is a blog that supports videos and pictures, and allows the user to customize the page and content

any way they would like. The blog has opportunities to find and upload pictures and videos from

either the computer or the internet. It has word boxes and boxes to add links to websites. The

teacher also has control of appearance, meaning they need to know how to choose different
options and change them to their liking. This requires all of the basic knowledge that goes along

with most computer software programs.

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

The artifact has not been used in practice yet, but I will foresee many uses and advantages to it in

the classroom. The blog can be used as a study tool for the students. If they have a big test

coming up, instead of a traditional study guide or in connection with one, they can create or look

at a blog already created that has all the important information. It gives interactive options and

presents the information in a more inviting way than a textbook or study guide would. The blog

program can also be used for students who miss a day of class. If a big topic or activity was

done in class and students missed it. The teacher can update a page with all of the relevant

information including videos and pictures for the students. This way they can look up the blog

and be caught up on what is happening in the class without taking the time out of class to catch

them up.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

The artifact has prepared me to teach in a diverse society because not all students learn the same.

Some students may learn everything they need from the textbook or listening in class, but some

students need something visual and appealing such as the blog for them to understand. This goes

for every subject and every type of student; they are all different and need different
accommodations to learn best. I also realize that not all students will have access to the website

or computers, so for them it is important to give them time to look at the blog in class. These

aren’t special treatments, but more accommodations to help all students learn better.
