PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this laboratory exercise, the student technician
will be able to determine the carbon residue in a sample of
petroleum products.

EQUIPMENT
1. Glass coking bulb

2. Sample charging syringe (15 mL)

3. Metal coking furnace @ 550°C (1022°F)

4. Beaker

5. Desiccator

6. Weighing balance

7. Holder

8. Gloves

9. Grease for desiccator

MATERIAL
1. Used oil

2. Other samples of petroleum products

PROCEDURE
1. Place a new glass coking bulb in the coking Ramsbottom
furnace at 70°C for about 10 minutes to decompose any
foreign organic matter and to remove water.

2. Then take it out and place it in a closed desiccator over for

3 to 5 minutes and then weigh it this will be (W1).

3. Shake the sample thoroughly and then by means of a

syringe introduce 5ml sample into the coking bulb.

5. Again, weigh the filled coking bulb that will be (W2).

6. Now Place the coking bulb in the furnace at the

temperature 550 Celsius and allow the filled coking bulb to
remain in the furnace for 20 minutes.

8. After 20 minutes take out the coking bulb and keep it in a

desiccator for 3 to 5 minutes for cooling.

9. Again, weigh the coking bulb this will be (W3)

10. Now use these readings in formula to evaluate the

amount of carbon residue in specific oil.
REVIEW QUESTIONS
Define Carbon residue?

residue left when a hydrocarbon stream is completely
distilled.
