A textile designer works with a team of designers and purchasing staff to create designs for

woven, printed, and knitted fabrics. They also attend trade shows in order to stay current on
trends and fashions to create marketable designs. Textile designers also develop yarns, fabrics,
prints and trims. Most are expected to manage and supervise production timelines, create
artwork, and test materials.
Textile designers mostly work in the fashion industry, but they can also be found in areas such
as interior design. Creating patterns and designs for rugs, towels, bed sheets, furniture, as well
as other things.
The work environment is heavily team based. Designers need to be able to collaborate well
with others, meet deadlines, work well under pressure, be creative and be detail oriented.
Most textile designers have a bachelor’s degree. Different degrees include Bachelor of Fine
Arts, Bachelor of Arts in Design, or a Bachelor if Arts in Textile Design. Studying marketing,
design software, trends, and the basics of fabrics. Knowledge of texture and form, exploring
basics of color, and learning about the properties of different fibers, dyes, fabrics, and yarns are
some of the requirements needed for the job.
The median salary for a textile designer in the fashion industry was $72,720 as of the year 2018.
