Objectives of the project
• To make effective irrigation using solar power irrigation system.
• Investment with minimum cost
• Design a system with no pollution
Site assessment and crop water requirement

We have selected Khatam un nabiyeen mosque in kart-e-

char,Kabul,Afghanistan
This mosque has a very beautiful yard full of rose flowers and
trees,
Area for irrigation is almost 2000m2.
Type of plant : Ornamental trees and rose flowers
 Irrigation system type : flooding irrigation
crop water requirement
• For understanding the amount of crop water requirement we need to
multiply the area with 0.006.
• CWR = 2000m2 * 0.006 = 12m3 = 12000 litters
12000Lit* 1 gal/3.7854 = 3170 gal
Well dimensions
• Depth = 60m
• Diameter = 1m
• Water elevation = 25 m
• Static water level = 60 – 25 = 35m
• Draw down = subtracting the
static level from the pumping level
so
• Draw down = 4m
Water horse power calculation
• WH = (TDH * Q * SG)/ 3960
• TDH = (Static water head + drawdown + additional lift) + friction loss
• Static water head = 35m
• Drawdown = 4m
• Additional lift = 5m
• Estimating friction loss over the distance of 80m pipe
• Pipe length in feet = (3.28ft/m)* 80m = 262 ft
Water horse power calculation continued

• According to the table the friction loss for

the 262 ft pipe is equal to 3.28 * 1.7 = 5.6ft
= 1.7m
• TDH = (35 + 4 + 5) + 1.7 = 45.7m = 150ft
• Q = CWR/ total sunshine hours a day
• Considered 7 hours sunshine a day
• Q = (3170gal)/(7*60 min) = 7.55 gal/min
• WH = (150* 7.55* 1) / 3960 = 0.286 hp
Pump size calculation
• WH = 0.286hp
• Pump efficiency = 80%
• Actual pump power required = WH /
Pump efficiency, 0.286 / 0.8 = 0.36 hp =
0.36* 746 = 268watt
PV array sizing
• Ppeak = 8* (HT * Vd) / Gd
• Vd = daily crop water requirement(m3 / day)
• HT = Total head
• Gd = Mean daily global solar radiation
• Ppeak= 8* (44*12) / 5.5 = 768watt
• Loss in cable = 3%
• Total system power out put= 768 + 768*0.03=
790 watt
• Selected 255 watt panel
• Total required panel = 3
Total system power out put
Wire sizing
• The total system power
is 790w.
• The operating voltage
is 38V.
• Allowing 3% voltage
drop and length of
60m.
• According to , the size
of the wire is equal to:
10mm2

Commissioning and Testing
Commissioning of SPIS systems involves visual observations as well as tests and measurements to
verify the safe and proper operation of the system.

PV system commissioning procedure typically include:

1. Completing final installation details.
2. Completing visual inspections.
3. Verifying compliance with NEC requirements.
4. Conducting electrical verification tests.
5. Vo/c, Is/c, insulation resistance, polarity.
6. Conducting user orientation and training on
7. system operations and safety.
8. Verifying that all structural and electrical components are properly installed and secured.
9. Verifying that all components are installed in a neat and workmanlike manner, including wire
management practices.
Maintenance Plan
SPIS systems require periodic maintenance to ensure safe and reliable operations over the long-term ,
and to maximize performance. A maintenance plan ensures that essential service and testing is
performed on a regular schedule.

What we have learned
1. By doing this project we have learned about usage of SPIS and the
effects of it on reducing the pollution in environment .
2. We have learned how to design the solar power water pump.
3. We have learned about load calculation of SPIS water pump.
4. We have learned that the advantage of SPIS is much more and
economic as compared to other systems .
