RELEVANCY OF ROAD:

 Especially relevant to people in the North because


of the cultural as well as the accent.
 A lot of Theatre is spoken in received pronunciation
such as Shakespeare, Northern actors can speak in
their original accent and the audience can relate to
the accent and language used shown in the spelling
of the text in the script such as “t’waiter” with
phonetically spells the Northern pronunciation of the
before waiter which is dropped except from the “t”.
 The play is raw and honest in the portrayal of the
characters and the situation they find themselves in
as a collective, such as poverty which leads to more
personal troubles such as mental health and
alcoholism.
 The play itself inspires others to get into theatre,
because it shows understanding and shows that
real people in difficult circumstances who had “soul”
and intelligence.
 Due to the fact all the actors were Northern there
was an understanding of the naturalistic and poetic
nature of the script.
 The play is a kaleidoscope evening in Northern
England.
 Even to this day poor people have got poorer and
rich people have got richer.
 Jim Cartwright is from Farmworth, a small, industrial
town, hit badly in the 1980s by economic struggle.
 Written from a place of rock bottom, the feeling that
“it couldn’t get worse.”
 People will resonate in any decade because of the
political issues.
 Northern England has suffered worse than the
South such as in the Coronavirus pandemic where
the unemployment rate had a large divide between
the North and South. Written from a place where
people thought they couldn’t get poorer and now
they have.
 There is new found hope in the play “Road.”
 39.888% of the voters, voted for socialism, this

shows that people want change and to help others.
