FIBONACCI NUMBERS/ SEQUENCE:

A sequence in a pattern is an ordered lists of numbers called terms and the arrangement of
these terms are set by a definite rule.

To form a pattern, we simply start with number one (1), It is observed that to find or extend the
Fibonacci Numbers/Sequence in a pattern is by adding the two previous terms.

Since number one (1) is a single term and theres no other number or term to add with,
therefore, we simply write 1 as the first number or term in our pattern. ( F1 = 1 )

The same case for the next number or term in our pattern, theres no other number except 1, so
the next number or term is also 1. ( F2 = 1 )

Now, for the next number/ term in the sequence, notice that we have already two terms in our
pattern, as the rule says that adding the two previous terms finds the succeeding number/ terms in the
pattern, hence, we write ( F3: 1 + 1 = 2 )

There are three terms produced in our pattern; 1 is the first term, another 1 as the second term,
and 2 as the third term. Following the rule in finding the succeeding numbers in our pattern is through
adding the two previous term from the pattern which refers to number 1 and 2 in F3 as our previous
term. We simply write ( F4: 1 + 2 = 3 )

Now, we produced four terms in our pattern which refers to 1, 1, 2, and 3. To continue
extending our pattern, do the same rule repeatedly. The new identified two previous term in our
pattern refers to number 2 and number 3.

Example: From F1 down to F10

F1: 1 F6: 3 + 5 = 8

F2: 1 F7: 5 + 8 = 13

F3: 1 + 1 = 2 F8: 8 + 13 = 21

F4: 1 + 2 = 3 F9: 13 + 21 = 34

F5: 2 + 3 = 5 F10: 21 + 34 = 55 and so on so forth

From the given example, we created a pattern with special sequence also widely known as the
Fibonacci numbers / sequence. ( 1 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 5 – 8 – 13 – 21 – 34 – 55 - ......... ).

It has many interesting properties which are visible in nature ( see examples in the module).
It is also interesting to note that the ratios of successive Fibonacci Numbers approaching the
number Φ (phi). Also known as the Golden Ratio with approximate value of 1.618......... as the numbers
becomes bigger and larger.

The Golden Ratio is applied in the works of arts, shapes, and figures which are considered as
aesthetically pleasing. It shows the right and exact ratio and proportion.

Example 1.

The human DNA molecules consist of 34 angstroms long and 21 angstroms wide for each full
cycle of the double helix spiral.

Example 2.

If you have a wooden board which measures 0.75 meters wide, how long should you cut it such
that the Golden Ratio is observed?

Solution 1:

Let x be the unknown portion of the cut. = 1.618…. it is understood that the

denominator of the right member of the equation is 1. The new equation as follows.

= now simplify the equation by cross multiplication. 0.75(1) = 1.618…(x) as the new

Equation. Now divide both sides of the equation by the numerical coefficient of x. The new equation is
