Tell us something about you (background, an interest, a talent, etc.) that is an integral part of your identity,
and why. (maximum 2000 characters with spaces)

Basketball is one of my interests, I've played on many teams; Sister's Keepers, Toronto Triple Threat, and Central
Tech. I had the opportunity to travel to different locations in the United States, and Quebec, we won many
tournaments. Also as a Green Champion, a representative group through the city of Toronto, aims to make every
community and neighborhood more sustainable to live in and making sure everyone knows how to take care of their
environments properly. Frequently, subconscious biases are formed against neighborhoods and communities that
have had bad reputations in the past. When I discovered the Green Champion program, its mission resonated with
me: to help improve the environment where people live, especially to teach people how to properly Recycle, Save
Water and use a Green bin. As a member, together with other members, we planned monthly events, such as having
a barbecue in a public space with ice cream trucks, face painting and prizes to be won, while having information tables
about how to properly care for their environment for Recycling, Saving Water and using a Green bin. During these
events we would also give out surveys regarding environmental issues for the people of the community to sign. After
joining Green Champion, I wanted to find other ways in which I could become more involved in the community. This
was when I started volunteering in the Tree Care program. During my time there, I was a representative at the Tree
Care program. I went to different homes for people who volunteered for us to work on their trees and fruit trees that
needed help growing properly or to see if any of them had any diseases. At Green Champion Leaders, I built
meaningful friendships and learned the values of acceptance, understanding, and compassion. At San Romanoway
orchard/garden, I applied the same skills in a professional setting.

Describe a problem you've solved or one you'd like to solve. Why did or do you feel it is important and what
steps did or would you take to solve it? (maximum 2000 characters with spaces)

During the summer basketball camp, I taught the campers the different principles and fundamentals of basketball over
the summer. I was responsible for planning workouts, judging and critiquing each player while giving advice, and
guiding the campers to realize their potential. With the skills and knowledge that I have gained from this activity, I have
been able to provide encouragement and criticism when appropriate or needed to others, which has helped develop
my leadership and communication skills. During our summer basketball camp practices, I would talk to the team and
challenge them to see how far each of their skills have improved. I had one camper who was shy, hesitant, and unable
to express her wonderful skills. Although she would pull back into herself, I challenged her with more skill training drills
to lead her in the right direction, instilling confidence in her skills. One issue that I observed through coaching at a
summer basketball camp was the lack of encouragement and support from each other's teammates. Basketball
breeds a hyper-competitive environment. As their coach, it was my duty to bring out the best in all the campers. My
staff members and I realized that we had to assess the situation and address the issues of hyper-competitiveness and
self-improvement. Without a positive mindset, less-skilled players are hard on themselves because basketball often
becomes problematic for these individuals and as the camp was inclusive to all campers we needed to improve our
approach. Our team of experienced senior basketball players/coaches decided to deliver the "sandwich" model:
honest, respectful, praise as well as criticism in order to maintain a healthy environment. We determined this was the
most effective way to instill a supportive and safe environment, while also showing the campers that there is always
room for improvement.
