Advantages and Disadvantages of studying in a mixed school

Mixed schools refer to the integrated education of male and female students in the same
environment. This co education system began to develop in the 19 th century and in the dawn of this
new millennium, it has gained much popularity. Studying in mixed schools is always subject to
controversy. Hence, the question arises- Should boys and girls study in the same school?

To begin with, when girls and boys study in the same school, school diversity is promoted. When
students are exposed to diversity at an early age itself, they will be able to adapt to this type of
environment as in the future, their working environment will comprise both genders. In fact,
students who are not educated in mixed schools often find it hard to socialise with the opposite sex
since they are not used to interacting and talking to it. Hence, the familiarity with both girls and boys
at an early age itself in mixed schools promotes co-existence, socialisation and prepare students for
the real world.

Secondly, a school with mixed students offer an environment that gives both girls and boys the
opportunity to express their views and opinions. By attending and participating in academic and non
academic activities, all students can learn about gender equality at a young age itself. There will be
no gender discrimination and stereotyping. Girls and boys may learn that they are equal in every
ways. Hence, studying in a mixed school is indeed beneficial.

However, studying in a mixed school has several drawbacks. Primarily, when girls and boys study in
the same classroom, there can be a degree of shyness and or intimidation on behalf of students who
are particularly introverted. As a result, they may prefer to stay in their own cocoon instead of
socialising with the fear of being mocked or bullied. This can lead to poor academic performance.
Finally, studying in a mixed school means that girls and boys have more time to spend and interact
with each other. Eventually, this can lead to students dating, thereby distracting them from their
studies.

To conclude, studying in mixed schools is like a double edged sword. Along with its merits, it has its
demerits. However, in my opinion, it is indeed beneficial as at an early age itself, students learn how
to behave and cope in an environment comprising both genders given that in the future, they will
work in the same environment.
