EXERCISES
Exercise 1.1 [2]
What is the difference between switch and router?
Solution:

Switch
 A Switch is a device in a computer network that connects other devices together.Multiple
Data cables are plugged into a switch to enable communication between different
network devices.
 Switch main objective is to connect various devices in a network.
 Switch is used only in LAN.
 Switch is not compatible with NAT.

Router
 The Router is a device that is designed to sent and receive data packets between computer
networks.A router examines a destination IP of given data packet and decide the best way
to transfer the data.
 Router main objective is to connect various networks.
 Router is used in LAN and MAN.
 Router is compatible with NAT

Switch

The main objective of switch is to connect various devices simultaneously. It can decide
which computer is the message intended for and send the message directly to the right
computer.Switch is intelligent
Router

The main objective of router is to connect various networks simultaneously.  It usually
connects at least two networks together, such as two LANs, two WANs or a LAN and its
ISP network.  Routers can calculate the best route for sending data and communicate with
each other by protocols.

Router is working on a higher level of network layer than switch. Router is very different
from the switch because it is for routing packet to other networks. A switch is only used
for wired network, yet a router can also link with the wireless network. router have more
costs than a switch.

Exercise 1.2 [2]

A router is used to connect different _________________?
Solution:

A Router is used to connect two or more computer network and transfer the packets of data
between them.

Exercise 1.3 [2]

Write the IP address of your computer.
Solution:

IP address:
192.168.10.9
Exercise 1.4 [2]
Switch is used in which topology?
Solution:

Switch is used in Star topology. In Star troplogy all devices are seperately connected to a hub or
switch.
Exercise 1.5 [2]
which device is best (Switch/Hub/Gateway/Router) state your reason ?
Solution:

Switch:A Switch connects various devices together on a single computer network.Switch is

intelligent, It is not like of hub when a packet arrives at one port,it is not copied to the other ports
so the data is invisble for other ports. It just copied the data to the required port.

Hub:A Hub is a networking device that allows you to coonect multiple Pc’s to a single network.
A hub contains multiple ports. When a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so
that all segments of the LAN can see all packets. Hub acts as a common connection point for
devices in a network.

Gateway: The Gateway is a passage to connect two networks together that may work upon
different networking models.

Router:The Router is a device that is designed to sent and receive data packets between
computer networks.A router examines a destination IP of given data packet and decide the best
way to transfer the data.

According to me In Switch And Router, switch is best because in switch data packet is not
copied to all ports as like of hub.In Switch data packet is just copied to that port that sender want
to share with them.
The router is a internetworking device that is designed to receive and forward data packets
between computer networks. A router examines a destination IP address of a given data packet
and decide the best way to transfer the packets.  A gateway is simply a device or hardware that
acts as a "gate" between the networks.

A Router is More Capable as compared to other network devices like switch and hub.e.g
hub is a device that is mainly used to sent the data between connected devices. While Router
has the capability to analyze and modify the data while transferring it over a network, and
it can send it to another network .
