Heat Transfer Exercises Problem

Name: Lupanggo, Paula Mae G.

Student No.: 20151163370
Problem:
Determine the heat transfer surface area required for a heat exchanger constructed
from a 0.0254 m OD tube to cool 6.93 kg/s of a 95% ethyl alcohol solution ( Cp = 3810
J/kg.K) from 65.6 deg C to 39.4 deg C, using 6.30 kg/s of water available at 10 deg C.
Assume that the over- all coefficient of heat transfer based on the outer tube area is 568
W/m2.K and consider a counterflow. Ans. 41.4 m2
Given:
OD=0.0254 m
kg
ma=6.93
s
kJ
C pa=3810
kg ∙ K
T a 2=65.6 ℃

T a 1=39.4 ℃

kg
m w =6.30
s
T w 1=10 ℃

W
U o =568
m2 ∙ K
Solution:
Q a=Q w

m a C pa ( T a 2 −T a 1 ) =m w C pw ( T w 2−T w1 )

( 6.93 ) ( 3810 ) ( 65.6−39.4 )=( 6.30 ) ( 4187 ) ( T w 2−10 )

T w 2=36.23 ℃
∆ T A =T a 2−T w 2=65.6−36.23=29.37 ℃

∆ T B =T a1 −T w 1=39.4−10=29.4 ℃

∆T B −∆ T A 29.4−29.37
LMTD= = =29.38 ℃
∆TB 29.4

Qa=Qw =Q= ( 6.93 )( 3810 ) ( 65.6−39.4 )=691766.46 W

Q=U o A o ( LMTD )

Ao =41.45 m 2
