NIGHT FESTIVAL

Red curtain shaking vigorously in the hands of two muscular

lean men.

The curtain is pulled off violently.

Out rushes a man in a red costume with Karuppasamy's spirit.

He screams and screeches and shakes his long sword, ringing
\1the chain of bells on the sword.

The bells shake madly.

There are lamps on black stone everywhere. The place bathed

in red and fire amidst the dark black night and the black
stone temple.

(CU)

Fire catches up and slips through the wood. Kerosene falling

on it makes the fire lunge.

(ECU)

The fire sparkles in Senthil's wet eyes.

His eyelids close.

A teardrop rolls down and falls down onto the ground, shining
like pearls from the golden fire.

DAY MEAT SHOP IN TAMILNADU

(ECU)

Plop.

A drop of blood fell on the wet dirt.

Plop Plop Plop.

More drops of blood fell on the dirt, it was a tiny puddle.

Splash.

A splash of bloody water poured on top of it, washing it

mixing it, and making more of the puddle.

The annan at the meat shop wiped the circular piece of

tamarind trunk and threw a chunk of meat on top of it and
started chopping it up.

The two new goats stared at him in amusement as few drops of

blood fell on their eyelids and forehead.

The annan poured more water on the wooden platform.

Eight little hoofs plopped on the dusty road struggling to

run back but moving forward instead. They joined four tiny
feet happily following their dad's lean but stern legs.

Dad pulling the two goats casually, Senthil and Bhagya

holding on to each of the ropes and the goats struggling a
bit to free themselves but walking forward under Dad's strong
pull. Senthil and Bhagya have their small bags with them. Dad
is holding two big bags and a shopper bag also with him.
Dad'd chin shined from the new shave and oil.

DAY RESTAURANT IN TAMILNADU

(MCU)

The annan at the restaurant poured curry into Senthil's and

Bhagya's plates. One can see their bags beside them. The
Calendar beside them showed the date.

Senthil tore two pieces of parotta and put them down for the
goats without their dad seeing them.

Senthil looks at Dad to check if he saw.

DAY WAY FROM TAMILNADU, HILLY WINDING ROAD

View of the goats and the hillsides around from inside the
front cabin of a cargo-auto rickshaw.

(Wide)

The rickshaw slowly scaling the hillside and disappears in

the thick mist and fog that hid the top of the hill. Sun went
down and rose and went down and rose and went down and rose
and went down and almost rose. Sound of temple music and
bells in a hypnotic rhythm.

#EARLY MORN. SENTHIL'S HOUSE IN THE ESTATE QUARTERS

Dad is lighting the lamp in front of the deities' pictures.

They keep looking at the distance as dad bows in front of
them. Senthil sees the light through the tiny hole in the
blanket, he lays quite as he sees his dad walking slowly out.

GRANDMOM
Dei, Muthu, take Senthil also to the
temple. Dei Senthil, get up and go
with dad.

Senthil.

Senthil tries hard to stay absolutely still when his blanket

is quickly pulled away and grandmom is standing holding one
end of the blanket.

GRANDMOM
Senthil, get up and go to the temple.

Senthil gets up and as he pulls the rest of the blanket as he

goes but Bhagya hold on to it tight. Bhagya and Anbu the goat
are sleeping together.

EARLY MORNING TEMPLE

The goat, Kannan's fluffy white ears and sharp eyes and
height and shapely tail are inspected closely by the village
priest at the temple. Senthil looked on as they gave him a
saffron mark on its forehead. He and his dad bowed before the
idol. There are a lot of lit lamps around and a lot of red
colour. The hypnotic temple beats keep ringing.

NIGHT FESTIVAL FOREST

Fierce looking dogs with shining eyes run past through the
dense forest. They don't look around, they don't stop or
pause or wait. They seem to exactly know where they are
headed. They rushed past the trees, they seemed not to be
bothered by the bushes, they saw right through the pitch
dark.

DAY NEAR SENTHIL'S HOUSE

Bhagya is running with Anbu in her arms, his hair is combed

and his face made up with a red spot on his forehead and a
black spot on his chin to ward off the evil eye. She looks
back and runs as if someone is chasing her.

Their friends join behind her as they cheer and run around.
Senthil tries to get front in the group running.

............

Senthil moves a small stool near a wall and tears off a day
from the tear-off-calender.

He sits near Kannan, the sacrificial goat and feeds him the
paper from the calendar.

Kannan chews the paper snack.

Kannan and Bhagya with Anbu in her hand peeps at a fish curry
being made in a neighbour's house.

Senthil and Bhagya look at their rice plates with only green
leaf curry beside, they look at each other.

Anbu comes and eats rice from Bhagyas hand. He chews it fast
and asks for more.

Senthil hides a handful of rice in his pocket.

Kannan chews the paper from the calendar with a later date.
He is fed a handful of rice which he gobbles down in a
second.

GRANDMOM

SENTHIL
Ath vanth patti Kannanukk pasichuth.

GRANDMOM
(Cutting him off mid-sentence)

We see only the furious grandmom during this exchange. Sound

of Senthil running away.

fastly passing through the dense line of trees, with fire in
his hands and fire around and black and red cloth. Not much
of him is visible, he looks more like a blob of fire and red
gushing through the dark. Dogs running through the forest in
dark.

handheld bell ringing around Karuppasamys picture in the
house and lamps, more calendar pages being torn. Dad doing
puja with a long beard and unkempt hair. Senthil examining
his two strands of beard in a mirror, Kannan looking with his
strands of beard, Dad looking at his beard in the mirror,
Anbu jumping onto Bhagya for rice, more calendar pages,
Senthil taking out rice from his pocket, More bell ringing by
Dad, Tying Kannan's knot, A dog looking over their house,

Senthil laying on his bed staring up in the night, he looks

beside over Bhagya.

(From top) Senthil looking at Bhagya sleeping hugging Anbu

near him, he turns to look at his mom and dad on his other
side. The night is more silent than ever.

Sudden barking and growls and Kannan's cries from outside

making a loud commotion.

Senthil get up first, Anbu jumps out and starts running

around, Dad gets up and gets out of the bed, all of them run
out of the house.

Dad runs up to where Kannan is tied to find four ferocious

dogs attacking Kannan, Kannan trying his best to jump around
and defend himself. He tried to run around as long as his
leash would let him, but the dogs wouldn't give up.

Dad ran up to them with a stick and hits the dogs off, they

bark and come at him too, when people from the other houses
in the combined quarters also come out and join him with
sticks or stone and they chase the dogs away.

Once they chase them the fierce dogs quickly vanish into the
darkness like magic.

NIGHT FESTIVAL FOREST

Karuppasamy lunged with his might, screaming, with his

blaring torch and sword and bells and his helpers with their
torches. They all ran with dogs around and leading them.

DAY SENTHIL'S HOUSE

Everyone is gathered around Kannan, Dad examines the goat's

wounds.

GRANDMOM
Saamikk athe pudikkale! aththa nayaye
vitturukka! Athe bali poda mudiyath.
Innum onnu irukkaleya, pesame athe
kodungo! Saami kopam vaangavenda!

NIGHT FESTIVAL

Someone pouring kerosene into the fire, blazing it up.

Deafening music blaring around. One guy poking a long stick
into the fire. Fire crackling. Saamy blessing Dad holding his
hand on his forehead and pushing him away. Dad is dressed in
red and black and has a full-grown beard. The earlier guy
poking the stick again in the fire. Dad and a couple of
others standing humbled in front of the estate manager who is
dressed in his short trousers and shoes and long socks. The
guy poking in the fire again.

DAY SENTHIL'S HOUSE

Anbu is tied at the pole where Kannan was tied earlier.

Kannan is not there.

Tearing calendar page. Anbu eats some rice from a paper and
then the paper.

NIGHT FESTIVAL

A huge fire in the teardrop in Bhagya's eye and she turns

startled quickly and she runs aside.

Karuppasamy rushes in with his fire and sword and helpers.

Dad tugs at a rope, rope on which Anbu is tied.

Karuppasamy lifts and swings back his sword.

Anbu's head rolls on the floor.

There is blood gushing everywhere.

A hand suddenly holds Bhagya. Its Senthil. She hugs Senthil

crying.

A foot suddenly lands splashing blood around the goat's head

as we see close to its eyes.

People dance madly in the fire and around. goat head and the
body lying on the ground. Karuppasamy also dancing in the
middle, off-centre in the frame.

POV of the eyes of blood and mud splashing over the frame,
feet and fire in the background, frame half immersed in the
blood-mud, floating in between two realms.
