AS Media coursework script (The Lost Souls)

FADE IN:
EXT. BONFIRE - NIGHT
Late at night in their family’s farm house, 4 girl cousins are
gathered around the fire roasting marshmallows, drinking Arabic
coffee and enjoying their time.

DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. BONFIRE - NIGHT

Girl 1 pouring Arabic coffee in a paper cup, serving it to Girl 2

and 3 as Girl 4 is roasting a marshmallow.

DISSOLVE TO:
INT. BONFIRE – NIGHT
Pan of the girls sitting by the fire. They look up towards the
right and notice their grandmother standing.
ALL FOUR GIRLS

!Grandma

.GRANDMA, QATARI,75, very traditional and likes to tell old tales

GRANDMA
!‫شمه‬
Shamma!
SHAMMA, aka Girl 2, Qatari, 18, GRANDMA’s granddaughter and was
named after her hence why she is closest to her.
SHAMMA
‫نعم يما؟‬
Yes Grandma?
GRANDMA
 !‫يبيلي كرسي اقعد عليه‬
!Go get me a chair to sit on
‫بتخليني واقفه؟‬
?Are you going to make me stand

.SHAMMA stands up and go gets a chair for her Grandmother

You scared us Grandma!
GRANDMA
"‫"خرعتينا‬...‫أيا عليكم‬
Oh… “I scared you”
.‫لين الحين ما عرفتوا معنى الخرعه‬

If that scared you, then what would you say after meeting Umm

Grandma, who’s Umm Awejah?

GRANDMA
‫ام عويجه ينيه كانت تطلع لنا بين فتره وفتره‬.
Umm Awejah is a ghost who used to visit us once in a while.

It’s okay don’t get scared, this happened a long time ago.

GRANDMA points at the trees.

GRANDMA
.‫ يمكن تشوفون ريولها او شعرها‬،‫شوفوا هناك بين الشير‬
Look over there by the trees, you might spot her feet or hair.

ZAINAB
‫ لين الحين تشوفونها؟‬،‫يما‬
Grandma, does she still visit?

GRANDMA
.‫ً تطلع‬
‫احيانا‬
Sometimes.

!‫اتغشمر معاكم‬
I’m just joking!

ALL FOUR GIRLS start to laugh.

!‫ خلنا نسولف يابنات‬.‫الينيه الحين ماتطلع‬

It has been a long time since she last visited. Let’s just sit
and enjoy!

DISOLVE TO:
EXT. BONFIRE TREE BACKGROUND – NIGHT
Um Awejah (the ghost) would be shown standing, wearing a white
gown with long black hair, whilst staring and the four girls and
their grandmother from a distance.

EXT. BONFIRE – NIGHT

SHAMMA
.‫ بس انا مب مرتاحه ابي ارجع البيت‬،‫مشكوره يما‬
Thank you, Grandma, but I don’t feel comfortable. I want to go
home.

CUT TO:
EXT. DRIVEWAY – NIGHT
SHAMMA is on the phone with her mother.

SHAMMA
‫ هال يما‬،‫الو‬
Hello mum.
‫ انتي شلونج؟‬،‫بخير‬
?I am good, how are you
.‫اي راده البيت‬
Yes I am coming home now.
!‫ خرعوني‬.‫يما يقولون قصص تخرع‬
They started sharing scary stories and it made me uncomfortable.

SHAMMA pauses and stares into the dark street and says goodbye to
her mother while heading towards her car.
