PROJECT
PULLEY SUPPORT ASSEMBLY, DESIGN ANALYSIS

Feb. 26, 2021

Due date: by 12:00 p.m., Thursday April 08

BONUS: If submitted by 12:00 p.m., Thursday April 01, up to 3.5 pts will be added to Test1 grade

✓ The project is a group effort (max: 3 members per group). Every group member is expected to fully
participate in the project. Protect your work and do not discuss/share work/ideas with other than your
group members. Names to be submitted by March 05 into BB (please follow instructions). You may work
individually on the project if you cannot join a group.
✓ One report is required from each group and due by the scheduled due date and time.
✓ No late work will be accepted.
✓ Similar work (in part or in full) will share the grade.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

You are to analyze the safety of Pulley-Support Assembly (Fig. 1) using ANSYS. The Pulley is
rotating at 2750 rpm to transmit a 4.5 kW of power:

o The Support is made from Cast Iron - Grade 60.

o The Shaft is machined from AISI 4140 OQT 700 steel.
o The Sleeve is made from C5100 Bronze and lightly press-fit into the Support.
o All other parts are made from regular Structural steel

INSTRUCTIONS

CATIA may only be used to create the solid model for the Support. The solid model for other
parts must be created and assembled within ANSYS.

• All contacts must be carefully checked and set.

• Obtain a good mesh for the assembly without slowing down the solution process.
Include an ISO figure of the meshed assembly, for the ANSYS report

• The external loads and the proper supports must be carefully assigned.

• Solve for the stress in the Support.

Dr. M. Ouerfelli -- 2
Include an ISO figure of the stressed Support, for the ANSYS report

• Analyze the safety for the Shaft

• Analyze the safety for the Support

• Proper documentation of your work is required

− Properly name your project and label your ANSYS work and related CAD files.
− Members names must appear on all work
− Include the Project Name “Pulley Assembly: Design Analysis”, in all work
− To: Dr. Mohamed Ouerfelli

• Provide your Conclusions on the safety analysis here:
