Lesson 2

Rain
Date: 11-10-20 Materials Needed: pencil, raindrop Due Date: 11-19-20
worksheet, adding to 10 worksheet, rain in
a jar worksheet, crayons, 2 clear jars,
shaving cream, blue food coloring,
scissors.

Objective(s) Students will add to 10 in 10 different ways by using the rain drops.

How do you know if you’ve met the objectives?: When the students complete the
worksheet of adding to 10 in 10 different ways.

Engage (5 minutes)
Check out this resource to get an understanding of what you will learn today.

Read the book, “One Rainy Day”

If the book is not available watch the video,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmLA8fdbscw
Share out what you saw with a partner
If virtual share out as whole group.

Explore (10 minutes)

Here are 2 resources to help you explore the content/skill.

Explain (20 minutes)

Now that you know what you’ll be learning, let me explain the objective and
clear up any misconceptions.

Today we are going to be learning about rain as you saw in the story
book/video at the beginning of class. Also, you will learn how to add to
10 in 10 different ways by using rain drops. We know that rain is
formed by the sun heats up the Earth’s surface, then the heat turns into
water vapor, next the water vapor rises into the air, then the water
vapor cools and it turns back into water and then the droplets form and
then you have rain drops. So, by the end of the day today you will
know how raindrops are formed and then you will use raindrops to add
to 10 in 10 different ways. Watch me as I create rain in a jar but I will
need your help. First I am going to fill up 2 clear jar with water but not
all the way so I am room for shaving cream and I am going to set one
aside, Next I am going to add shaving cream to the top of my water of
one jar so it looks like a cloud, Then I am going to add drops of blue

food coloring to the water in the other jar that we set aside. Last, I am
going to have each of you come up and use the droppers to add the
food coloring and water mixture to the top of the cloud (shaving
cream) and we will start to see the food coloring fall from the cloud
into the water.

If virtual have them watch you and fill out the worksheet “rain in a
jar”. While I am making rain in a jar, use the rain in a jar worksheet to
draw or write what comes first, next, then, and last.

Apply (1-2 assignments; 30 minutes)

Here you will apply your knowledge and practice the skill. Make sure you follow
the directions for each assignment.

Now that we have talked about rain and how to create rain drops, you
are going to go back to your desk and there will be two sheets on your
desk, on the worksheet where you just see the rain drops, cut those 10
raindrops out. Then one the second worksheet you are going to use the
raindrops you cut out to add to 10 in 10 different way. The number you
come up with, be sure to write it in the blank raindrop. If you get stuck
use your rain drops that you cut out to help you count. If you finish
early you can color the raindrops and check over your work.

If virtual the directions will be the same but you will find the
worksheets in the packet.

Give the students 20 minutes to complete the worksheet and have them
compare their math worksheet to a partner and make sure their
numbers match up. If virtual, send them into breakout rooms and have
them compare answers.

Share
Turn in your assignment no later than the date below.

Discuss as a whole group. Allow students to share their work with the
whole group. If no volunteers, pick one person from each group to
share out their worksheet. If virtual, have them do the same but have
them post a picture in seesaw by the due date.

Reflect
