1. Describe in general the structure organization of ship’s crew!


The structure of ship’s crew on board is divided into 4 parts there are Captain, deck department,
engine department, and steward’s department. In deck department there is a chief mate as a senior
officer, second mate, third mate, deck cadet, boatswain,carpenter, able seaman(AB), and ordinary
seaman (OS). In engine department there are lead by a chief engineer and supported with second /
first engineer, third engineer, fourth engineer, and engineering cadet. Also with qualified members
there are pumpman, oiler and wiper. In steward’s department lead by chief steward the member
are chief cook and steward’s assistant.

2. How can you explain about the engine department on board?


In engine department is oversee with chief engineer, the second engineer is responsible for
supervising the daily maintenance and operation of the engine department, third and fourth
engineer is assist or help the second engineer in engine department. Engineering cadet is student
completing an internship program aboard ship. In engine also have qualified member they are
pumpman (usually found aboard of fuel tankers), oiler (one of junior crew members in engine
room), and wiper as the most junior crew member in the engine room).

3. What are the responsibilities of chief steward on board?


The chief steward directs, instructs, and assigns personnel performing such functions as preparing
and serving meals; cleaning and maintaining officers' quarters and steward department areas; and
receiving, issuing, and inventorying stores. The chief steward also plans menus; compiles supply,
overtime, and cost control records. The Steward may requisition or purchase stores and equipment.

4. What do you know about the master’s jobs?


 Supervising for completely equipment the ship with an assist by deck officer
 Managing the ship properly according to procedures / rules
 Make the ship seaworthy
 Responsible for sailing safety
 Responsible for the safety of the sailors on board his ship
 Obey the order of the ship's company procedure as long as it does not deviate from the
prevailing laws and regulations
5. What are the common job descriptions of deck cadet on board?
The cadet must first carry out a one-year training on board ships, executing tasks of an officer-of-
the-watch under the supervision of senior officers. They must study all about any officer job for
becoming a good officer when they’re graduated from their school or institute.
6. Do you know about the job of second engineers?
The Second Engineer or First Assistant Engineer is the officer responsible for supervising the daily
maintenance and operation of the engine department. He or she reports directly to the Chief
Engineer. The person holding this position is typically the busiest engineer aboard the ship, due to
the supervisory role this engineer plays and the operations duties performed. Operational duties
include responsibility for the refrigeration systems, main engines (steam/gas turbine, diesel), and
any other equipment not assigned to the Second Assistant Engineer/Third Engineer or the Third
Assistant Engineer/Fourth Engineer(s).
7. What is the difference between AB and OS in the deck department?
AB : An AB will work in a ship's deck department as either a watchstander, a day worker, or a
combination of these roles. At sea an AB watchstander's duties include standing watch as helmsman
and lookout.

OS : An OS performs a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck
department areas and equipment. Upkeep duties include scaling, buffing, and painting decks and
superstructure; as well as sweeping and washing the deck. An OS may splice wire and rope; break
out, rig, overhaul, and stow cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear. Additionally,
the OS secures cargo, as well as launches and recovers boats.
8. How can you define the chief engineers on board?
The Chief Engineer on a merchant vessel is the official title of someone qualified to oversee the
engine department. The qualification for this position is colloquially called a "Chief's Ticket". The
Chief Engineer commonly referred to as "The Chief" or just "Chief" is responsible for all operations
and maintenance that have to do with all engineering equipment throughout the ship.

10. The repair and maintenance of all electrical equipment is the responsibility of Electrical Officer.
