OSCE 1

Mr Tan is a 40-year-old single man who come from Banting. He has informed the counter staff he
wants a check-up but did not specify what he actually want.

 What brought you to here?


 Reason why he wants this check up
o Urgency
o Knowledge of HIV
o Emotional state
 Start with whether patient is involved in a sexual relationship, number of partners, gender of
the partner, protected or not
o Have you ever been in a sexual relationship?
o When is the last time?
o Gender of the partner
o Where do you usually go to find sexual partner
o Method of sex: sometimes people have anal sex, do you have it?
 High risk behaviour – sharing needles, drug user, homosexual, unprotected sex
 Transmission mode –
 What is HIV test and purpose of the test
 Brief interpretation of result – positive and negative – window period
o Negative result does not mean a person is protected, if continue high risk behaviour,
chance of getting HIV is still high
o Window period is the time when contacted the virus and the time of the antibody
get detected by the test
o Reactive or positive result means a confirmatory test need to be done
 Advice on safer sexual strategies
 Any other concerns
 Consent to do the test
