THE NATURE OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE SYLLABLE

THE SYLLABLE ENGLISH SYLLABLE DIVISION
INTRODUCTION
A syllable is a unit of organization for a
sequence of speech sounds. It is
typically made up of a syllable nucleus
(most often a vowel) with optional initial
and final margins (typically,
consonants). Syllables are often
considered the phonological "building
blocks" of words.
How to count syllable

Vowel sound

Cat : /kæt/ : 1 syllable

Hungry : /'hʌŋgrɪ/ : 2 syllables
Employ /ɪm'plɔɪ/ : 2 syllables
Collage /ˈkɒlɑːʒ/ : 2 syllables

THE NATURE OF THE SYLLABLE

We find a similar situation with the syllable, in that it may be
defined both phonetically and phonologically.
CONCEPTS

MINIMUM SYLLABLE ONSET (start)

is a single vowel in isolation that is, instead of silence, they
(e.g. the words ‘are’ /a:/, ‘or’ have one or more consonants
/o:/, ‘err’ /3:/). These are preceding the centre of the
preceded and followed by syllable: ‘bar’ /ba:/ ‘key’ /ki:/ ‘more’
silence. /mo:/
CONCEPTS (2)

CODA (end) BOTH

that is, they end with one or Some syllables have both onset
more consonants: ‘am’ /æm/ and coda: ‘ran’ /ræn/ ‘sat’ /sæt/
‘ought’ /o:t/ ‘ease’ /i:z/ ‘fill’ /fil/
