Reflective Piece

The Wicked Hearts of Men

Joel, Charles and Matthew live in the parish of Hanover in the community of George’s Hill

which is a rural area for three years (2014 -2017). Charles, Matthew and Joel lived together in a

four bedroom well furnished apartment.

“Yo dawg, wha deh gwann? Wha yuh a do fi yuh earth-strong?” asked Charles with a curious

tone to Matthew.

“Yuh wan know seh mi nu know yet pa,” Matthew replied.

“Yo dawg, mi did a say, mi, yuh and di genna cud a run in pon wha party together enuh. Yo, mi

waa piece a food inna mi pocket yuh zimmi,” explained Charles.

“So weh yuh ago get money fi put on party?” Matthew quizzically asked.

“Yuh know fi mi empress wi tek care a fi mi part n uno put fi uno yo,” Charles explained.

“Alright ma tink bout e zeen,” Matthew vaguely replied.

Matthew left for work. Charles then went to knock on Joel’s door, to tell him about his idea and

to ask if he would be a part of the plan. Joel told Charles he would be available. Later that day,

when Matthew came home, Charles went to knock on his door.

“Yo Matthew! Matthew!” he shouted while banging on Matthew’s door.

“Ma come yo,” Matthew explained as he opened the door. “Wha yuh waa now dog?” Matthew

stated with anger in his voice.

Charles gave Matthew a smirk, “Relax yo. Mi wan know if yuh go do e ting wid mi n Joel r not

cuz Joel seh yes enuh.”

“God know dawg, a really dat yuh deh badda mi fa? All right, yes!” Matthew answered with an

aggressive tone.

On Tuesday night, four days before the party, Charles went on the street to try make some money

since the party was coming up. He was hanging out with the few ‘friends’ he had made since he

entered the ‘game’ – scamming.

Charles spoke with a smooth and sincere tone, “Hello, good morning, this is Richard Brown

from the New York Pick It, Win It organization. I am calling to inform you that you have just

won 2 million dollars. Your name appeared on our system as the winner for the lucky pick.” He

continued in a winning manner in the hopes of getting his reward. “Mr. Schultz, listen to me

carefully, all you need to do is gi mi yuh information and your prize will be delivered to your

gate by 12 o’ clock today.”

Charles ‘made’ about $100,000.00 that morning from that same ‘client’ he called. After picking

up the money, Charles went on to ‘floss and endorse’ by buying all kinds of liquor and buying

his scammer ‘friends’ shots of rum. Charles then went home when he knew everyone would be

there.

“ Rich!Rich!Rich!” Charles said, while banging on the door. “Yo!Yo!, who deh ya? Yo G, man

bingo big today enuh!”

“Ah so mi deh hear in de street. All deh hear seh yuh ‘floss and endorse’ big wid fi yuh bwoy

dem,” said Joel.

“Yuh betta watch yuh back wid dem nigga deh enuh. Dem deh roun’ yuh n nah bingo so big like

yuh, dem ah go start bad mind yuh hard n yuh know to G,” Matthew ominously told Charles.

“Mi know man but fi mi nigga dem loyal yuh zimi. Nu fret pa,” Charles confidently replied.

Charles never had any doubts that his street friends would have any form of envy or jealousy

directed towards him but he stayed home as his boys told him to, he rarely went on the streets.

Instead he stayed home and made all the necessary final preparations for the party Saturday.

On June 26, the four bedroom house that was well-furnished was set ablaze, it was burnt to the

ground. Charles, Joel and Matthew and their girlfriends’ bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

The cause of their death was said to be foul play. It was said that spent gunshot shells were found

on the crime scene and was stated by the police that the case was gone cold and the killer was

suspected to be still at large.
