5th Semester Mechanical

Question Bank

Module-I

(1) What are the different types of kinematic Pairs? Give examples with sketches.
(2) What are the different types of constrained motion? Define them with example.
(3) State the Grashof’s law of mechanism.
(4) What do you mean by transmission angle? What is the Value of transmission angle to get a lock
or jam mechanism?
(5) Write the conditions for maximum and minimum transmission angle in a four bar chain
mechanism?
(6) What do you mean by the term ‘Degree of freedom’?
(7) Define Inversion of mechanism.
(8) What are the different types of inversions of a four bar chain mechanism?
(9) What do you mean by Class-I and Class-II mechanism?

Numerical:

(1) Find the max. Min. Transmission angles for the following mechanism:
Module-IV

(a) What do you mean by gear and gear train?

(b) What do you mean by simple and compound gear train?
(c) Write short notes on Reverted gear train and Non-reverted gear train.
(d) What do you mean by epicyclic gear train?
(e) What do you mean by ‘velocity ratio’ and ‘train value’ of a gear train?

Numerical:

(1) In an epicyclic train an annular wheel A having 54 teeth meshes with a planet wheel B which
gears with a sun wheel C, the wheels A and C being co-axial. The wheel B is carried on a pin fixed on
one end of arm P which rotates about the axis of the wheel A and C. If the wheel A makes 20 rpm
clockwise and the arm P rotates 100 rpm anticlockwise direction and the wheel C has 24 teeth,
determine rpm and sense of rotation of the wheel C.
(2) An epicyclic gear train is composed of a fixed annular wheel A having 150 teeth. Meshing with
A is a wheel B which drives wheel D through an idle wheel C, D being concentric with A. Wheel B and
C are carried on an arm which revolves clockwise at 100 rpm. About the axis of A or D.If the wheels B
and D are having 25 teeth and 40 teeth respectively, find the number of teeth of C and the speed and
sense of rotation of C.
(3) In a reverted epicyclic gear train, the arm F carries two wheels A and D and a compound wheel
B-C . The wheel A meshes with wheel B and the wheel D meshes with wheel C. The number of teeth
on wheel A, D and C are 80, 48 and 72 respectively. Find the speed and direction of wheel D when
wheel A is fixed and arm F makes 200 rpm clockwise.
(4) The arm of an epicyclic gear train rotates at 100 rpm in the anti-clockwise direction. The arm
carries two wheels A and B having 36 teeth and 45 teeth respectively. The wheel A is fixed and the arm
rotates about the centre of wheel A. Find the speed of wheel B. What will be the speed of wheel B, if
the wheel A instead of being fixed, makes 200 rpm clockwise?
