Officer's Report
On Sunday, April 4, 2021, at 0224 hours, I, Deputy Mitchell Black, 5311, responded
to 3145 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta Mitsubishi, in reference to an arson. Upon my
arrival, I made contact with Augusta Fire Department Engine 14, who stated they
located a vehicle fire, while en route to a call for service. Engine 14 stated they were
unable to locate the ignition source.
I located a gray 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander under the front awning of the business,
near the structure, which had heavy fire damage to the rear end. I made contact with an
Augusta Mitsubishi Employee, , who reviewed the camera footage. I
observed a white male approach the vehicle. The white male was wearing a red shirt,
blue jeans, and white shoes. I observed the white male tampering with the vehicle, near
the rear end, prior to the fire. The subject then removed a flag from a flower bed, which
was located near the awning. The subject attempted to light the flag on fire, but was
unable to do so. The subject then struck the top of a black 2017 Dodge Challenger with
the flag pole. The subject then left the area on foot. I observed a small dent on the roof
of the Dodge Challenger.
Engine 14 stated they responded to a call for service at 2005 Windsor Spring
Road, Cokesbury Preschool on 4/4/21, at 0126 hours (AFD 21-4801). Engine 14 stated
there was a grass fire on scene, but they were unable to locate an ignition source.
Corporal Brett Espinosa, C51, responded to the scene for a follow up. Corporal
Espinosa stated there was area with burnt grass and a cross that was broken and
burned. Cokesbury Preschool was a religious school. Deputies were unable to make
contact with a Cokesbury Preschool representative at that time.
Engine 16 stated they responded to 2250 Sconyers Way, Sconyer's Bar-B-Que, for
a Call for service on 4/4/21, at 0224 hours (AFD 21-4806). Engine 16 stated the grass and
a log, which was used as a sign, were burnt, but they were unable to locate an ignition
source. I observed fire damage to the log and grass in front of Sconyer's Bar-B-Que. I
was unable to make contact with a Sconyer's Bar-B-Que representative at that time.
On 4/4/21, at 0315 hours, Deputy Desmond Crawford, 5312, was patrolling the
(Narrative Continued)
area, and he located a dumpster fire behind 2115 Windsor Spring Road, Food Lion. Deputy
Crawford observed a white male wearing a red shirt, blue jeans, and white shoes, standing
near the dumpster. The subject was later identified as suspect Billie Burdette II. Burdette was
detained. Upon searching Burdette, a lighter that was still warm to the touch was located in
his front right pocket. Burdette had ashes on his hands, shoes, and the front of his clothing.
Burdette smelled of burnt plastic.
Investigator Sean Morrow, 715, responded to the scene, and the case was turned over to
CID. Burdette was arrested, and I transported him to The Charles B Webster Detention Center.
