GUSSETED BASE

Gusseted base plates are used for columns carrying heavy loads and loads
accompanied by moments. In this case fastenings are used to connect the base plate
and the column in the form vertical gusset plates and gusset angles. The usual
arrangement consists of a base plate, two gusset plates one over each flange of the
column and two angles. 2

Question 10.2 S.K Duggal Pg 519

A column ISHB 350@661 N/m carries an axial compressive factored
load of 1700kN. Design a suitable bolted gusset base. The base
rests on M15 grade concrete pedestal. Use 24mm dia bolts of grade
4.6 for connection

Design bearing strength of concrete = 0.45 ƒck = 6.75 N/mm2

DESIGN STEPS
Step 1. Area Required for slab base = Load / permissible stress
Area, required = 1700x103 / 6.75 = 251.85 x103 mm2

Width of base plate = Depth of the column section

Dimension of base plate
Will depend upon the gusseting material
1. Gusset plates : Assume 2 plate 16mm thick on each flange
2. Gusset Angles: Assume 2 gusset angles 150x115x15mm

MINIMUM WIDTH REQUIRED TO ACCOMMODATE :

8/21/2020
350 + 2*16 + 2*115 = 612 ~ 620 mm 5

DIMENSION OF BASE PLATE

Projection of base plate beyond flange toe = (620-612) /2 = 4 mm
Length of base plate = L = Area required= 251.85 *10 ~ 410 mm
width of plate 620

Available area should be > Required area

Provide base plate 620mm x 410mm in size

CHECK FOR BEARING PRESSURE ON CONCRETE:

P = 1700*103 = 6.68 N/mm2< 6.75 N/mm2

CONNECTION
Clause 7.6.2, 7.6.3 pg 50

No of Bolts required to carry/transfer load = Load on Connection

Bolt Value

Assume column end and gusset have complete bearing, 50% of the
load will be assumed to pass directly and 50% of the load will pass
through the connections.

Load on connection = 50% (1700) = 850kN

Number of Bolts required =

850/65.21 = 13 ~ 16

Number of bolts are increased from 13 to 16 to provide bolting in

regular pattern preferably divisible by 4.

DESIGN STEPS: GUSSETED BASE

The gusseted base plate may be designed as follows:
(i) Divide the factored load on the column by the design bearing strength of
concrete and find the area of the base plate required.
(ii) Choose a thickness of gusset plate (16 mm)
(iii) Gusset angle (say 150 x115 x 15) The vertical leg of the angle must have a
length to accommodate two bolt line.
(iv) To accommodate all elements the width of the base plate is determined.
Min Width of base plate = Depth of the column section + 2 (thickness of gusset plate)
Length of the base plate = Area of base plate required / Width of the base plate
(v) Bearing stress on base plate = w = Column load/Actual area of base plate

Thickness of base plate:

Determine the thickness of the base plate required is corresponding to the greater of
the two bending moments consideration is adopted,

Let b = distance between the gussets
c = cantilevering projection of the base plate
M1 = wc2/2

B.M. at the Centre:

The part of the base plate between the gusset plates bends in two principal directions.
Considering two way slab action the B.M. at the centre may be taken as-

CONNECTIONS
• Load transmitted to one gusset plate = 1/4 (load on the column)
• Length of weld on one gusset plate to connect with the column = Load on one
gusset plate/Strength of weld per mm length
• The height of the gusset plate may be selected to accommodate the weld. The
height of the gusset plate may be reduced to 100 mm at the ends. Similarly,
provide also weld connection between the gusset plate and the base plate.
