Dishonor (1888)
Identify Jackson’s Main Points:
According to Jackson, the federal government repeatedly broke treaties
with various Indian tribes because it did not feel obligated to keep its
promises to the indigenous people. The government believed it was
sufficient to simply organize councils to assist with Indian affairs and never
carry out their plans. Jackson opposed giving all Indians immediate
citizenship because he did not think it would solve all of their problems. He
thought it was a bad idea to grant all Indians, civilized and barbaric,
freedoms all at once, without considering how unique each individual is.
