2008 International Conference on Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis, Beijing, China, April 21-24, 2008 Research on Insulation Condition Monitoring System for Power Transformers Shuangzan Ren, XuYang*, Wenhu Yang, Baofeng Xi, Xiaolong Cao Sate Key Laboratory of Eletical Insulation & Power Equipment, Xi'an iatong University 039, Cina *E-mmilnuyangiamil xi.edaen Abstract-Power transformer is one of the most important ‘components in the power system. The operating reliability of transformers mainly depends on their insulation status. An grated system which contains the monitoring of gus-in-oil analysis (DGA), partial discharge (PD), contamination of the bushing surface, the equivalent capacitance and dissipation factor (tand) of the bushing is introduced in this paper. Based on the above parameters, the engineer could get further detailed information about the insulation status of the transformer. This ‘system has been applied in several substations and obtained good results, Index Terms—condition monitoring, insulation, integrated system, transformer. 1. IntRopuction ITH the rapid development of power system and the continuous enhancement of the rated voltage, safe and stable operation of the transformers became more and more important. According to the statistics, insulation faults accounted for 80% of the total transformer faults [1], $0 itis necessary to carry out condition monitoring, which could reflect the insulation status of transformers timely. For the insulation status could be represented by some relevant parameters (such as partial discharge, gas-in-oil, equivalent capacitance of bushing as well as its dissipation factor, ete.) and a single parameter could only indicate a certain aspect, the “Insulation On-line Integrated Monitoring System for Power Transformers” (see in Fig. 1) was developed to monitor the ‘operation status of transformers from multi-aspects “aacyery, Fig. Structure sketch ofthe system 978-1-4244-1622-6/08/825.0 UL. MEASUREMENT ITEMS A. Partial Discharge Measurement Partial discharge is one the most important parameters to reflect insulation status of power transformers. For on-line PD ‘measurement, corona on the overhead line is the most difficult interference to be distinguished from the PD inside the transformers. In. this system, two Rogowski coils with magnetic core were employed to couple PD signal respectively from the flange of the HV bushing and grounding wire of its measuring terminal, meanwhile, several anti- interference methods were used to get the real and effective PD signal, ‘The main anti-interference methods include: Digital filter which is used to eliminate the certain frequency band interference. 1) 2) Phase windowing which is used to eliminate periodical pulse interference. 3) Dynamic threshold which is used to eliminate background noise. 4) Polarity discrimination which is used to climinate random pulse interference, I is worth pointing out that double sensors directional coupling method as well as polarity discrimination anti- interference method (which is done by software) have shown a comparatively good effect on eliminating random pulse interference [2] B. Equivalent Capacitance and Dissipation Factor Measuring the dissipation factor (tand) together with the equivalent capacitance of the HV bushing is an effective method (0 reflect whether the HV bushing has been affected with damp or short circuit between capacitance plates etc [3], ‘A high precision low current sensor based on zero flux was, used to collect current signal and a potential transformer was used to collect voltage signal, The current signal was transferred to dielectric loss measurement unit by coaxial- cable after isolation amplifying of preamplifier (as in Fig. 2) After digital processing and calculation, the tand and equivalent capacitance of bushing were obtained, so the insulation status of the transformer was represented. For the strong interference in the field, simulation anti-aliasing filter was adopted in this system, zB Past Astor § Fig. 2. Scheme of and and eapactane measurements . Gas-in-oil Analysis ‘Mineral oil and cellulose pressboard are the main insulation ‘materials used in oil-filled power transformers, The oil and pressboard would gradually age and decompose due to thermal and electric stress, so Hs, Hydrocarbon gases and CO are formed, and most of which are dissolved in the oil ‘Analyzing the dissolved gases in oil (DGA) has been a widely used method when detecting initial faults in power transformers in service [4] Based on the principle of gas chromatography, the MGA2000-6 (developed by Ningbo Ligong Monitoring ‘Technology Co. Lid) completed gas collecting. Then the data Were sent to the integrated system, and the increasing rate of contents of various gas could also be calculated simultaneously. According to the gas contents as well as the increasing rate, the alarming information were generated correspondingly. The measurement indexes of the MGA2000- 6 system are shown in Table I. Earthing Current of Iron Core ‘When transformer is in service, the core must be grounded in one point and only one point. Multi-point earthing fault of transformer core should be prevented, found out in time and treated quickly in order to avoid the extending of fault [5]. By adopting current checking method, a transformer core carthing current online monitoring device was developed. The current signal in transformer core is coupled by CT (current transformer) firstly to be voltage signal, then collected by acquisition card. After then, the information will be inputted ‘nto the industrial computer in order to estimate whether the carthing of transformer core is normal or not. ‘The measuring range and precision are SmA~10A and 4 (1% ImA) respectively. Besides, for the transformer core earthing current is a power frequency signal, the magnetic core of the sensor in this system is made of siliconestec! sheet ‘The silicon-steel sheet has a comparatively higher magnetic conductivity and a lower loss and coercive force, which can censure that no distortion occurred and a smaller phase errors for the secondary side current wave of the CT. E, Contamination of Bushing Surfaces In view of more and more serious air pollution and the jereat loss caused by contamination flashover, preventive methods have been taken to improve the operation roliability of bushing. An online monitoring device on bushing contamination is developed by Xi'an JinPower Electrical Co.Ltd, whose measuring data are also sent to the integrated system. According to the leakage current, ambient temperature and humidity, the contamination status of bushing could be acquired by corresponding criterion, ‘The technical parameters of JinPower’s system are listed as, follows: 1) Signal input range: 0~75mA; 2) Measuring accuracy: 1%; 3) Ambient temperature: 0~+40°C (Host); - 40~+60 °C (sensory; IL. SOFTWARE IMPLEMENT A. System Platform ‘The inlegrated monitoring system could rn automatically and build its own condition monitoring database for the ‘measurement results the data remote transmission from each substation to regional power supply bureau and provincial electric power company could also be carried out through WAN, Based on BIS framework, the date could be accessed by remote client via Web browser (se in Fig.3) G a
