Later we revised the textbook by including all level 3 and 4 kanji of the old Japanese Language Proficiency Test for students who will take the test. We wish to express our gratitude to Dr. Michael Handford, Ms.Mizutani from ASK Publishing and especially to our students of the Japanese language class of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Tokyo. They have given us many comments, questions, and suggestions that we utilized to improve this textbook. September 2010 ‘Authors Hele O| DAE AS SAS SHote Hartt STIBA AAAI eatoll HS ae + USS CHegtect. The tortoise shell and animal bones on which the kanji were written were found in the royal tomb. Most of the kanji in this age were pictographs and were deeply related to religious ceremonies. It is said that there are more than 50,000 kanji characters but only about 2000 kanji characters are taught in the Japanese school education system. 2. Categories, Kanji can be classified into four main categories, Pictographic characters: originated from the pictures of objects. (ex. ILI JII 5 HE) 2 Indicative kanji: made of points and lines to indicate abstract ideas. (ex.- =: F) @Compound kanji: composed by combining pictographic kanji and other types of kanji. (ex. 93 FA) @Phonetic - ideographic kanji: formed by combining phonetic and ideographic elements. (ex. lif #7) More than two thirds of the kanji characters belong to this category. Most kanji are formed by combining kanji characters. Learning the first 300 kanji thoroughly will help make it easier to study the other kanji characters. 3. On— readings and Kun — readings Generally Japanese kanji has two readings; On — reading and the Kun — reading. On ~ readings; these are based on the Chinese pronunciation when they were introduced in Japan Kun — readings; these are based on the pronunciation of the Japanese word whose meaning was close to that of the kanji character. 4, How to write kanji strokes There are some rules for writing kanji. 1.
