Technical English 4 (main study book) :

Unit 5: Topics-Processes; Causation; Stages.

Grammar and vocabulary: expressing cause and effect, choosing between active and passive.

Unit 6: Topics-Risk; Crisis; Project.

Grammar and vocabulary: expressing likelihood, future passive forms, comparatives.

Unit 7: Topics:Progress; Comparison; Product

Grammmar and vocabulary: Noun phrases; tenses and language forms,comparing and
contrasting, technical versus non –technical terms.

Unit 10: Topics: Test plans; Test Reports; Test MethodsGrammmar and vocabulary:hyphenated
phrases acting as adjectives; present/past participial phrases; concision; expressing damage, metal
fatigue, failure.
Cambridge for Engineering: ( this study book will be used to practise and consolidate specific
terms and vocabulary used in technical language)

Unit 2: Materials Technology-describing specific materials; categorising materials; specifying and


describing properties; discussing quality issues.

Unit 3: Components and assemblies-describing component shapes and features; explaining and
assessing manufacturing techniques; explaining jointingand fixing techniques; describing positions
of assembled techniques.

Unit 5: Braking Point –describing types of technical problems, assessing and interpreting faults;
discussing repairs and maintenance.

Unit 9: Theory and practice-explaining tests and experiments;exchanging views on predictions and
theories; comparing results with expectations, discussing cause and effect.

NOTE: The units are of the same complexity and have a similar number of tasks.Each group might
be given different units to study.

The REQUIREMENTS for ASSESSMENT


HOMEWORK 1. ( deadline : beginning March, )

Homework 1 will be an Interactive Presentation delivered in pairs. Important! The


Interactive Presentation has to contain tasks for the audience .

You can think of the subject of your presentation on your own or choose one from the following
list:Description of automated systems.

 The importance of precautions; written instructions and notices

 Simplifying and illustrating technical explanations

 Improvements and Redesigns

 Mass transportation

 Matching robots to their Applications

 Household technology- domestic appliances

 Properties of Materials

 New developments in smart phone technology

 Designing and describing an experimentPresenting research:results and discussion

 Forces
 Vehicle safety

 Formula 1

 Dakar Rally

 Africa eco race

 TEST 1 .( MID -TERM Test)

The test is scheduled for the last week of March .

It will comprise units 5-6 from Technical English 4.

The test will check reading comprehension, listening skills, vocabulary and grammar.

HOMEWORK 2. Home Reading( deadline-April 10- 25 )

Home Reading-books or articles on any subject related to the studies.

Requirement: send , please, the information about the book or article , or sites of the article,
as well as the authors‘ names,to my email beforehand.A short summary of these 40 pages in
approx. 200 words is required.This task must be done before your actual speech delivery(i.e. the
end of March).

NOTE 1.: please, attentively count not just the number of pages, but more importantly the
amount of the text required for real 40 pages, excluding graphs, pictures, blank pages, etc.( the
folder“book pages to consider“)

NOTE 2. :use visuals only when necessary, e.g. to show the book cover, to show the title, the
plan of your speech, main ideas, quatations, important statistics, numbers or equations. The main
criterion is your speaking.Reading will not be accepted .( it might work only for a passing mark,
not higher).

NOTE 3. :for missing the deadline, the mark will be lowered by 2 points.

HOMEWORK 3. ( deadline 27 April – 4 May)This homework will be a


written assignment .

Students will be given different written assignments.Each student will have about
eight weeks to accomplish this task. Students may choose their prefered task.
Make a decision and inform me, your lecturer, as soon as possible, so that we talk in
person about the particular task.

The tasks you may choose to work on: ( Choose only one task that you find is the
best for you.)
Write a technical report.

Write a summary of a scientific article.

Write a report on your course paper.

Watch a Talk Show or a lecture on You Tube or TED.Talks .com assigned by your teacher and
answer the questionsand tasks in written.

Final Test.( one week before the examination)


The test will cover the most important grammar , language and specific vocabulary issues, as well
as reading and listening comprehension tasks.

Details will be given later.
