When a postoperative patient like John arrives on the ward, he is carefully lifted off the
stretcher and laid down on a specially prepared bed. The patient is lying with the head to one
side. Since he is still generally unconscious, an artificial airway is in his position and the
nurse stays with him to ensure that his airway is kept clean. He also checked his pulse and
