Lesson Idea Name: The Life of a beautiful Butterfly

Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: CD-SC3.4a Observes, explores, and describes a variety of animals and plants.
Describes their basic needs and life cycles.
Rationale:
Four-year-old’s can use their rapidly developing vocabulary and experiences to discuss plants, animals and
their needs. Large group discussions and targeted small group instruction can be used to answer children’s
specific questions.

Guiding question or statement: What are the stages of the butterfly cycle?

Set a goal that you want to achieve with this plan for learning with the use of multi-media tools? Will you
use your video as a sample of what students will design or will you use the video for meaningful learning
about a topic? Be sure to mention what tool you/your students will use: The goal of this lesson is to explain
the butterfly life cycle. After watching the video, reading the book, and doing the activity the student
should understand butterflies.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) The video will give the student the chance to learn the lesson by
hearing and by seeing.

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will introduce the lesson in circle time with the book The Amazing
Life Cycle of Butterflies by Kay Barnham (Author), Maddie Frost (Illustrator). Then the students will watch
this video https://youtu.be/1EQeYA5Qbic about the butterfly cycle with dance moves. After that the children
will watch the video I created. All together the entire lesson will be about two hours long. The lesson will
extend longer as they learn about the environment and how different animals and plants live in the
environment.

Importance of technology: The technology used in this assignment is important because it allows the student
