There is a function in ZBrush that does not seem to be very common.

The IMM Curve has a randomize setting. You can set a curve to
randomize what is drawn out. This can be very helpful to create some
unique results.

If you are creating one from scratch, the main thing you need to know
is that every piece must be able to fit together. If you have different
end points they need to match up with the edges of another midpoint. I
am not going to go into how to create a tri-part IMM in this doc. There
are plenty of tutorials online for that. Just create several IMM tri-part
meshes that fit together and are interchangeable. Each variation is
essentially its own tri-part brush.

Randomizing a Curve
The Drip IMM included in the Water Creation Set has a randomize
setting already applied as do a few other brushes from XMD. Simply
draw out the curve. If you want to randomize it just click the endpoint
to change the randomization.

Randomize Settings
Here are the settings that control the randomize settings

1. MultiMesh Select – This is a quick cycle between each multimesh.

It is the same as selecting from the M key with an IMM brush
loaded.
2. Variations – Here you set how many variations you want to
randomize. For example, if the IMM brush has 5 meshes in it you

 would set this to 4. The mesh you have selected counts as 1
already.
3. Variations Setting – This will make the brush cycle through the
meshes each time it is drawn out or the end point is clicked. There
are a few different settings here.
a. Static
b. Forward
c. Back
d. Random

You can play with the settings here to get some great random results.

*Each multimesh requires its own setting.
