How we define Poverty:

Poverty is a state of not having enough/any of the

- Examples of these could be, food, clothing, access

premature health when they reach adulthood

● Families who experience poverty have an additional strain which


can lead to things like substance misuse

● Impacts of poverty on families and children are lifelong

● Children in poverty suffer from little food and nutrition leading to


many health issues
Social Impacts of
Poverty

● Adult in poverty were almost three times more likely to


report being in poor health
● Males adults in poverty were twice as likely to have
been arrested
● The children in poverty are at greater risk for family
problems
● They are also at greater risk for antisocial behavior
● Poverty has harmful effects for relations with friends
and relatives than for social support.
Cultural Impacts of

What are the impacts of Poverty through culture and
religion?

- Religion is seen often as a target for criticism,

inequalities, and injustices such as poverty

- Some people argue that cultural beliefs contribute

to poverty

● Social Inequality is unequal opportunities for

different social positions or statuses within a group

Mental Impacts
of Poverty
● Mental problems can come of poverty as well as ignite them

● Poverty is one of the main sources of mental illness.

● Poverty tends to cause depression, anxiety, and other severe

cases of mental illness

● The canadian mental health association states that 21% of their

clients with mental health issues live in poverty

● On the flip side, mental illnesses can lead to poverty with the

money being spent to pay for medical bills

Causes of poverty in North America:

1. Low wages
2. Worker inequality
3. Industry diversification
4. Taxes are too high for some people because of their low wage jobs
5. Tax laws are too strict
6. Widening gap between the poor and the rich
Poverty Effects on
Students
● Poverty can affect IQ score of children which has a influence on test score

● The effect of a $10,000 increase in income showed improved

performance in cognitive activity for those in poverty which could help

with school activities

● Children in Poverty face impaired cognitive development which impact

will can felt in the classroom and the far future

● Students that need mental health care will receive about 15% less

services if in poverty

● Students often lack adequate winter clothing this can negatively affect

both there health and the development of relationships as they are less

likely to partake in winter activities

● We emailed Ms. Parsons and asked her the following questions:

1. How do we go about students whose school success is impacted by poverty?


2. How does the school reach out to students?
3. How do fellow students reach out to those affected by poverty in and outside of school?
4. What would you like to change about the current system in place to help those affected by
poverty?
5. Can you see a clear differentiation between those living in poverty vs those not? (within
school)
6. What can we, as students, do to help?
