Jinbaori for Shuten/Anubis Action Figure

This is a low-to-no sewing project. I did everything with a glue gun and folding (though if you really wanted
you could sew it.) This can be worn over Shuten/Anubis’ armor or subarmor if you’re missing pieces. Once
you’ve got the brown piece cut and folded you can put it on the figure and check to make sure it’s going to
work out right for you. This is not intended as an accurate pattern for a jinboari. I have never made a
pattern before; hopefully this will not be too confusing to people who know more about sewing than me. -_-

You will need: 1 strip of brown cloth 3” wide and 7” tall (something sturdy that can hold a crease well)
4 strips of 5/8” golden-yellow ribbon, each about 4“ long (about 1ʼ total).
Low-temp or Multi Glue gun, 1 glue stick, maybe a needle and brown thread.
Fold lines are dashed (permanent fold/temporary fold), cut lines are solid, gray area is optional*.

Fold in 1/4” on the short ends of the brown fabric and

glue in place to prevent fraying. Only use a little glue,
enough to get it to stay.
Measure 3” in from the edge of one short side (this will
be the back), fold and crease. Unfold and fold the piece
in half the long way and crease. While this is folded snip
the collar at the 3” fold (just under 1/4“ cut length while
folded). Unfold again, and re-fold the piece exactly in
3“ the middle so that the ends are even. Make a cut on
each side of the piece for the shoulders approx. 1 1/16”
from the fold. *You can leave the shoulders squared or
snip the shoulders at an angle (the angle is more
accurate, but the squared edge is easier to put the
edges on later). Unfold the piece and, using the length-
wise fold to find center, make a 1 1/4” cut on the back
side and a cut all the way to the collar on the front.

Next, fold in each of the edges as shown and glue them

in place. This is to prevent fraying and shape the piece.
You can also place a scrap of brown fabric (if you have)
at the back of the collar (I did not include a real collar,
since it will be covered up). Only the sleeves are left as-is.

Your cut and folded

piece of material
should now look
x3 like this

Divide one of the

three lengths of ribbon
in half - this will be
used for the shoulders.

Attaching the edges:

Front: Take two 4” pieces of ribbon, fold the
top over on itself twice and glue to create the
tops. Carefully place these two strips on
the front, and glue them starting from
the top. Positioning is a matter of taste,
about halfway down the front side of the
shoulder should work as a starting point,
and about <2/3 of the ribbon should
show on the front. Flip the piece and fold
the remaining >1/3 and glue it down to
the inside.
Shoulders: From the half-width ribbon
strips you will need 4 pieces about 1.25”
long and 4 pieces 1/2” long. (or 2 pieces 2” long and 4 pieces 1“ long if you left them squared).
Placing these is the hardest part. Fold over the edges a shown and glue the smallest pieces down
first. Leave half the width to fold over to the back.

When youʼre done, it should look like this:

Remove the forearm armor from the

figure (the rest can stay on). You can
glue/stitch the sides before or after putting it on the figure - it can be frustrating to get around the
armor in both cases. Start parallel to the top of the back slit and work your way down. Once the sides
are sealed up, you can put the forearm armor back on, add the finishing touches, and youʼre done!
