CLASS I COMPOUND CAVITY

OCCLUSO PALATAL OCCLUSO FACIAL PREPARATION

PREPARATION IN ON MANDIBULAR
MAXILLARYFIRST MOLAR MOLARS
CLASS I COMPOUND RESTORATIONS

Occlusal lingual (OL) amalgam restorations may be used on

maxillary molars when a lingual fissure connects with the distal
oblique fissure and distal pit on the occlusal surface.

Occlusal facial (OF) restoration is on lower molars when the buccal

fissure extends onto the buccal surface.

MATRIX APPLICATION
Armamentarium

I. Tofflemire Retainer
II. Matrix Band
III. Wooden Wedges
IV. Small Stainless-Steel Matrix Material
ARMAMENTARIUM
OBJECTIVES OF MATRIX APPLICATION
• To support the lingual portion of the restoration during
condensation

• To prevent “LAND-SLIDING" during condensation

• To ensure marginal adaptation and strength of the restoration

TECHNIQUE

The Tofflemire matrix retainer is

used to secure a matrix band to the tooth

FURTHER STEPS
• This type of matrix band does not intimately adapt to the lingual
groove area of the tooth
• Positioning small strip of stainless-steel matrix material between
tooth and band already in place
• Covering wedge with softened compound.
• Immediately insert the compound-coated wedge between the
Tofflemire band and the cut piece of matrix material.
• Compressing compound gingivally, which adapts steel strip to
lingual surface.

AMALGAM INSERTION
INSERTION AND CARVING OF MATERIALS

- Insertion of the amalgam is done as previously described for the

CLASS I occlusal tooth preparation.

-The amalgam must be well condensed

CONTOURING AND CARVING OF MATERIALS

- When the preparation is sufficiently overfilled, carving of the occlusal

surface may begin immediately with a suitable size, sharp carver
instrument.
- All carving should be done with the edge of the blade perpendicular
to the margin and with the blade moving parallel to the margin.
- Use an explorer to remove excess amalgam adjacent to the lingual
matrix before matrix removal
CARVING
CARVNG COMPLETED
COMPLETED RESTORATION
CARVING
• After the occlusal carving is complete, loosen the Tofflemire retainer
from the band and remove the retainer
• As the band is freed from the tooth, the compound, wedge, and the
cut segment of steel matrix material may be lifted away from the
tooth.
• Complete the carving on the lingual surface.
• Adjust the restoration for proper occlusion
COMPLETED CAVITY

Mandibular molars exhibit

fissures that extend from the
occlusal surface through the
facial cusp ridge and onto the
facial surface.
