STATE PHILOSOPHY
1. What is state philosophy?
Word “Philosophy” is combined from “Philo” (which means love in Greek) and
“Sophia” (which means wisdom in Greek). According to these elements, we can
explain philosophy as love of wisdom or knowledge.
Philosophy always tries to find the answers for basic questions.
State Philosophy is philosophical foundation on which a state is established. A
country or a nation is established on this state philosophy. Without this, state can’t
operate well. State philosophy also becomes political foundation of the state and
its national ideology.
The ideology is used to characterize principle ideas, aspirations, beliefs, passions,
values, Weltanschaung, religion, political philosophies and moral justifications.
Pancasila as an ideology means that Pancasila becomes foundation of unitary
country of Indonesia, source of laws, regulations of societal life and public
policies
2. Principles of Pancasila
Word “Pancasila” is combined from “Panca” (which means five) and “Sila” (which
means principles). There are 5 principles:
Belief in the One and Only God
Just and Civilized Humanity
The unity of Indonesia
Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of
deliberations amongst representatives
Social Justice for the Whole of the People of Indonesia
The patterns of thought of Pancasila is as follows:
All the principles of Pancasila cannot be separated from one to another. They
must be understood in togetherness.
All the principles of Pancasila are interrelated. Belief in the One and Only God
must be connected with the principle of Just and civilized humanity, unity of
Indonesia, democracy and social justice principles.
