 STATE PHILOSOPHY
1. What is state philosophy?
 Word “Philosophy” is combined from “Philo” (which means love in Greek) and
“Sophia” (which means wisdom in Greek). According to these elements, we can
explain philosophy as love of wisdom or knowledge.
 Philosophy always tries to find the answers for basic questions.
 State Philosophy is philosophical foundation on which a state is established. A
country or a nation is established on this state philosophy. Without this, state can’t
operate well. State philosophy also becomes political foundation of the state and
its national ideology.
 The ideology is used to characterize principle ideas, aspirations, beliefs, passions,
values, Weltanschaung, religion, political philosophies and moral justifications.
 Pancasila as an ideology means that Pancasila becomes foundation of unitary
country of Indonesia, source of laws, regulations of societal life and public
policies
2. Principles of Pancasila
Word “Pancasila” is combined from “Panca” (which means five) and “Sila” (which
means principles). There are 5 principles:
 Belief in the One and Only God
 Just and Civilized Humanity
 The unity of Indonesia
 Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of
deliberations amongst representatives
 Social Justice for the Whole of the People of Indonesia
 The patterns of thought of Pancasila is as follows:
 All the principles of Pancasila cannot be separated from one to another. They
must be understood in togetherness.
 All the principles of Pancasila are interrelated. Belief in the One and Only God
must be connected with the principle of Just and civilized humanity, unity of
Indonesia, democracy and social justice principles.

 URGENCY OF THE INDONESIAN STATE PHILOSOPHY OF PANCASILA

EDUCATION
 Pancasila education is the structured and conscious efforts to create the learning
atmosphere and process so that students actively develop their potentials to have
competence, personality and knowledge.
 Students are expected to give constructive contributions to the nation, country and
societal life based on Pancasila values.
 The urgency of Pancasila education is to strengthen the nationhood soul to be
principle motive and a leading star for the future leaders in various areas and
levels.
 the Pancasila education is necessary to produce graduates as the primary force of
development and continuation of the future leaders t and continuation of at every
level of the society.
 PANCASILA IN THE COURSE OF INDONESIAN HISTORY
Pancasila has a background which indicates a long process of Indonesia history.
1. Global context of Pancasila
 There are three important events that took place as the global context of Pancasila.
Those are the struggle of Indonesian people to achieve independence, the World
War II and the formation of the investigating Body for the Preparatory of
Indonesian Independence.
 Based on this we can see further the formation of The Investigating Body for the
Preparatory of Indonesian Independence as the closer context of the birth of
Pancasila.
 On 1st of June 1945, Soekarno gave an address which was known as the Birth of
Pancasila. Soekarno stated that he merely extracted these principles of Pancasila
from Indonesia’s cultural and political heritage.
 These five principles of Pancasila were accepted and legitimized as the
foundation of the Republic of Indonesia on the 18th of August 1945. It’s suitable
in a such a pluralistic society Pancasila fulfills a need. Besides, the principles of
Pancasila are broad and general enough to include as many groups as possible
within its embrace.
 From historical perspective, Pancasila is a compromise or even agreement based
on a socio-cultural inheritance for the unification of various differences.
 Pancasila is a guarantee for preserving unity without losing particularity or
variety.
 Such a historical Pancasila becomes a history of a noble consensus and
compromise of various opinions and ideologies, in which the influences of secular
ideology, Islamic ideology and nationalistic ideology are prominent.
 Pancasila plays a role in the way of life, the philosophical basis of the state of
Indonesia and the source of every law in Indonesia in which the spirit of the
nation, its identity. Harmonious totality, and avoidance of public conflict or
disintegration, are evident in the history of Pancasila.
 Every Principle of Pancasila has to be seen together with the other principles in
Pancasila. One of the characteristics of Pancasila is that it allows different kinds
of approaches and interpretations. The various approaches and interpretations are
not only allowed but are necessary, insofar as they do not depart from the spirit
and framework of Pancasila itself.
 The understanding of Pancasila in the course of Indonesian history underlines
some important points as the following:
 Pancasila is the authentic product of the founding fathers of the republic of
Indonesia
 Pancasila values have its sources and are taken from traditional, cultural
and religious values.
  Pancasila is weltanschauung of nation and foundation of the Indonesian
state philosophy.
 The urgency of Pancasila in the course of Indonesian history is as the following:
 Pancasila remain existing in the life of nation and country, even if the
governmental administration of a regime is weak.
 It has been proven from the past efforts of changing Pancasila that
Pancasila is the best choice for the Indonesian nation.
 The urgency of the recent generation to have and express reasoning that
Pancasila is the best choice of the Indonesian nation.
 Pancasila as the state philosophy of Indonesia constitutes its role and function as
foundation of the unitary country of the Republic of Indonesia, ideology of the
country, system of philosophy and foundation for the science development.
 PANCASILA AS THE FOUNDATION OF THE UNITARY COUNTRY OF THE
REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
Pancasila as the foundation of the country has a meaning that all the
fundamental aspects of the Republic of Indonesia have to be based and/or in line with
Pancasila.
 Urgency of Pancasila as the foundation of the country is as the following:
 Public leaders do not have any disorientation in running the country
 Active participation of all citizens in the development process in all fields
of nation’s life is under the soul and spirit of Pancasila values.
 In turn, the aspirations and the goal of the country can be gradually
materialized so that Indonesia becomes the just and prosperous society.

PANCASILA AS THE IDEOLOGY OF THE COUNTRY

 As an ideology of the country Pancasila functions as guideline in the dimension of
the country, nation and societal life
 The urgency of Pancasila as the ideology of the country is as the following:
 To show the role of ideology as the moral guideline in the country, nation
and societal life so that the illegal drugs, terrorism and corruption can be
prevented.
  Pancasila as the ideology of the country, principally has the dimensions of
reality, ideality and flexibility containing openness, basic values and the
aspirations so that Pancasila can be academically accepted by the students.

 PANCASILA AS THE SYSTEM OF PHILOSOPHY

 There are two academic approaches of Pancasila as the system of philosophy that
are complementary to one and another. Those are as the following:
 Pancasila as genetivus objectivus which places Pancasila as an object
orcurrent that is investigated by other philosophical currents.
 Pancasila as genetivus subjectivus which places Pancasila as subject
investigating other currents of philosophy.
 Urgency of Pancasila as the system of philosophy is as the following
 To have reasonable explanation of the principles of Pancasila as the
political principles so that it can be further implemented in managing the
country
 To open dialogues from new various perspectives in the nation and
country life
 To be able to become the evaluation frame for the activities that are
connected to the country, nation and societal life
 PANCASILA AS THE SYSTEM OF ETHICS
 Pancasila as the system of ethics is branch of philosophy. Those five values
constitute Indonesian people’s behavior in all aspects of their life.
 The urgency of Pancasila as the system of ethics for the Indonesian nation is to be
norms of behaviors in the country, nation and societal life in Indonesia.
 PANCASILA AS THE VALUE FOUNDATION OF THE SCIENCE
DEVELOPMENT
 Pancasila as the foundation of science development means that all the five
principles of Pancasila become norms and guideline in developing science of
experts.
 Urgency of Pancasila as the value foundation of science development for the
students is to show the role of Pancasila as the normative reminders of the
Indonesian science development.
