DICKINSON POLICE DEPARTMENT Chief Dustin Dassinger Commission Memo ‘The Dickinson Police Department has looked atthe implementation of police body cameras for the department over the ast couple of years and has researched the issue more intensely following the national politea climate surrounding the Inw enforcement profession that has developed. | feel thatthe time is now to move forward with this project. ‘The reason why we are loo«ing atthe implementation of body cameras are: 1. Safety of police and the public. People act differently when they are being filmed. Police body cameras encourage good behavior by both police, as well as ‘members of the public, which can lead to a decrease in violence, use of force Incidents, and attacks on officers on duty. 2. Police body cameras may improve police accountability and protect officers from false accusations of misconduct. Police body cameras provide visual and audio evidence that can independently verify what happened in any given situation. 3. Police body cameras are a good tool for learning and have strong support from ‘members of the public. Video recordings from police body cameras can be used to ‘rain new and existing staf in how to perform during difficult situations. “The Dickinson Police Department emphasis training especially in communication, and de- escalation, inal ofits use cf force training. In addition to the Virtra training simulator we also do defensive tactics, and scenarlo based training utilizing force on force simunitions. The methods of recrultmert and hiring officers fr the Dickinson Police Department isa crucial step in creating an appropriate culture and shaping the behaviors of our officers.
