LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

CHANGES THAT MATERIALS UNDERGO

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Matter is anything that has a mas and volume, including all atoms and all
subatomic particles, but also all mixtures of compounds, all objects we
encounter around us, etc. the properties of matter include any traits that can be
measured, such as an objects density, color, mass, volume, length, malleability,
melting point, hardness, odor, temperature, and more.

There are two properties of matter which all substance are distinguished
by, they are “physical properties” and “chemical properties”.

The state of matter describes the distinct form that it takes: solid, liquid,
gas, or plasma.

Temperature has a direct effect on weather a substance exists as a solid,

liquid or gas. Generally, increasing the temperature turns solids into liquids and
liquids into gases; reducing it turns gases into liquids and liquids into solids.

LEARNING COMPETENCY

Describe changes in the properties of materials when exposed to certain

conditions such as temperature or when mixed with other materials (S4MT-lg-
h-6).

DIRECTIONS/INSTRUCTIONS

K – Know your group ( It should be individual anstruction)

I – Involve everyone

S – Share your ideas

S – Show care and respect for materials
E – Encourage everyone
S – Stay with your group

ENGAGE: Glance over.

 What word comes in your mind when you see these pictures?

 Has anyone of you eaten an ice cream on a sunny day? What happens to
it if it is not eaten?

 Have you ever left a glass of water out on a table? What happened to the
ice?

EXPLORE: Station House

Pupils are divided into 4 station house together with the materials assigned to
their group. ( material should divided into four station but the activity is
individual)

Necessary acts.
 Describe the physical state of the materials assigned to your group. (
Individual activity with the guidance of parents)
 Group 1; put pieces of crayon in the tin can.
 Group 2; put pieces of chocolate in the tin can.
 Group 3; put two spoonful of butter/margarine in the tin can.
 Using the matchstick, light the candle and let it stand on a small piece of
wood (gasera may also be used).

 Using a pair of tong, hold the thin can over the flame. Heat the tin can 2-3
minutes. Observe what happens.
 After 2-3 minutes, remove the tin can from the flame. Wait for a few
minutes until the material cools off. Observe what happens.
